there was this big crystal of sea salt just chilling under the CTRL key of my keyboard, so I decided to pop off the key. The only thing is that along with the key I actually pulled off the retainer.

So I'm not sure what compelled me to do so but I pulled off a second key. I think maybe I was thinking that I'd be able to put the CTRL key back in easier if I removed another key. Anyway, with that key I accidentally removed half of the key retainer. Okay, now I feel stupid and I finally overcame my caveman stubbornness and looked up a guide. Which told me to remove YET ANOTHER key, but this time so that I'll have a reference as to how I reassemble the key retainers.

so now I have 3 keys missing on my keyboard, and big fudgy fingers, no tools to work with the tiny pieces. But an hour later, somehow I reassembled my keys. and it's in working condition again.

Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever lost a laptop key before? I'm so happy I didn't give up because I feel like I would've ended up losing the key... ;(

yep, happened to me last year...with the same exact mechanism for reattachment. i stopped after my second key, though.

if you keep trying, you might end up breaking the little clips like i did.

i never did get them back on...

also before Ir ipped out 3 keys total, I was just basically trying to punch the ctrl key back intot he keyboard. Brute Force...is probably never the best strategy, these pieces is tiny.

i had taken keys off before...as long as the 'retainer' stays attached to the key, you should just be able to press really hard and reconnect it. but when they separate like your picture, that's when i encountered the problems

you fixed it? nice!

you should come fix mine.

the first key had the retainer attached to it, like I've removed keys before but I guess I never took the retainer out too, so they usually pop in pretty easy. But I actually had to remove the retainer, and reassemble it then put it back in the keyboard and THEN pop my keys back in.

At one point, the ctrl key was in, but then it was stuck. so every time I tried to type something it'd hotkey something.

I need to clean my keyboard and hopefully not break it like you Jabronies.

if you're extra careful you should be fine. I'd suggest like... not doing a non-letter key first.

I lost the "Fn" key on my old laptop but no one fucking uses that thing. The Fn key is like the kid in elementary school who picked his nose after getting a nosebleed.

my cat helpfully removed one of the arrow keys from my laptop a little bit ago

for those with big mitts tweezers maybe helpful with getting the little bits back in place.

Fn is totally vital on my lappy (vol / brightness..etc) functions rely heavily on Fn

I would kill a man without a working Fn key

well worded more accurately I would go on ebay and buy a new keyboard if my Fn key died.

I've honestly only ever used my Fn key for brightness levels a few times.

I don't use any of the F keys as F keys, just as like the volume, backlight, etc. so I don't use fn

as far as I'm concerned the FN key is for helping to make that one other key take screencaps.

It happened to me. And I googled it of course, and found the answer, of course.

Also, I happen to remember that very indecent picture of you and Lindsay Lohan.

I miss the Fn key, my mac doesn't have one. Knowing its not there makes the whole pointlessness of the Fn key so much worse ! :(

I can't find the picture :( I deleted a bunch of my posts at some time. Maybe I'll make a new and improved one when my procrastination is peaking.

I am missing my X and my F5. They've been gone for so long that I don't even notice anymore. I just press the little rubber piece where the x used to be, and it's just like typing.

generally laptop keyboards are not that hard to replace w/ a min of Google skillz (for field service guide for your model) and looking on ebay for a suitable (/ suitably cheap) replacement

yeah, I broke the little plastic thing that snaps the key back on. I don't really miss the x. it's okay.
