Toona has scored 2092 submissions, giving an average score of 1.45.

Now here is my question:

Does this make me a bitch? Or does it just mean that most of the designs suck? And, if only a small number of designs even make it to the submission floor, does that mean that all the good ones get lost with the "panel of judges?"

anyway, no one has comment on why everyone has such a low average - except for maddingo who just thinks i'm a bitch, but I blame the bad music.

it's really all about your taste. if you're giving all the good designs high scores, it's no problem that you differentiate by giving the bad designs low scores. nobody sees your score card, so it really doesn't matter. and the average is effected by your spread more than anything else.

take iotadial's vote, for instance. if he's skipping a lot of shirts, then it's like he's giving them a zero in terms of how his vote matters. if he's voting all shirts and giving an average of 4.34, then his votes really don't matter in any way.

well?

if your context isn't your impact on designs, what are you talking about? can you be explicit about what you're saying?

not picking on you: but i've never seen anyone be reasonable about this topic....

has scored 18215, giving an average score of 1.19

to make it interesting, and break it down:

$ : 105 (mostly 5$, a few 4$); 0.6% of all scores
($'s that printed: 11); 10.5% printed

5: 278; 1.5% of all scores
(5's that printed: 26); 9.4% printed

4: 526; 2.9% of all scores
(4's that printed: 23); 4.4% printed

3: 1064; 5.8% of all scores
(3's that printed: 36); 3.4% printed

2: 2094; 11.5% of all scores
(2's that printed: 29); 1.4% printed

1: 10233; 56.2% of all scores
(1's that printed: 53); 0.5%

0: 3670; 20.1% of all scores
(0's that printed: 16); 0.4%

i scored 183 of 398 printed designs

i think that the average voter's taste has been steadily veering away from things i like as the number of voters has gone up - which explains why a lot of things i score low end up printed, and some of the things i love will never be printed

there's a definite skew to my votes (it's heavy on the 1's) - mainly because i try to give a 1 for effort (no matter how bad it is) if it looks hand-done and/or there was some thought behind it
2's- 4's are based on idea and execution - many of which i would score higher and/or buy with some modification before printing
5's are for great execution or great idea
5$ are for the few that manage both a great idea and execution

0's used to be reserved for blatantly ripped off images or really offensive ideas, but after a while i got burnt out on totally unoriginal/ heavily overused cliche crap and "designs" consisting of nothing but vecorized photos from the web or clip art thrown together without an attempt to make it the artists' own - and that's had an impact on my average

personally i think a lot of things get through that never should have - but, maybe i'm just a bitch

rudra, compared to you....

historically, i give more 0's than 1's, but fewer 0/1's than you by maybe 10/15%. my more generous nature is spread across the upper reaches.

but i have rethought all this, based on the moral point in this thread. i have a new voting scheme voting forward; it makes voting easier and more natural, which is the only criteria i really care about.

i break submissions into three groups: shirts i would buy, shirts i would not buy, and shirts that tempt me in some weird way but are not ultimatley compeling.

i gve the "would buy" shirts 4 or 5, and nowadays always "$", depending on whether they're cool or truly rocking.

i given the "would not buy" shirts either 0 or 1, depending on whether they seem to me to have any redeeming quality.

i give the tempting shirts either 2 or 3, depending on how tempting they are: shirts that i have an initial attraction to but then say "no easily get a 2; shirts i really like but can't quite see giving a "$" get a 3. i occasionally give a "$" to a truly bad shirt that i'm embarassed to admit i'd buy.

under this new regime, i seem to be giving out 10% 4/5's, 30% 2/3's, and 60% 0/1's. you might think this miserly, but at least it's an improvement.

my total score starts trending up towards 1.5, which i'd think of as a win....
rudra
rudra on Jul 11 '06 at 3:25am
in a sense your system isn't that different

your overall 10:30:60 is more generous than my ~5:18:77
but it follows a similar trend - and like you said - it's a matter of taste

i have bought shirts i scored 4, and i have bought shirts for friends (which they LOVE, that i scored 2, and would not personally wear), and some shirts i scored 0 have sold out very quickly --- to each his own.

although i do feel that some of the more innovative and artistic designs don't get the overall score they deserve from the current crowd

hey I give an average score of .51 I think ur ok it all depends on whats put out there and what you like
toona
toona on Jul 11 '06 at 11:25am
haha. Well my initial question was really just about threadless's panel of judges. If everyone is scoring so low, is it because they let through a lot of stuff that no body likes? (I don't think that's the case anymore, i'll explain later) If this is the case, are they turning down stuff that the community would like, but never get to see?

But it seems that the real deal is (and this may have been obvious to everyone else but me) that everyone has different tastes and the majority of shirts don't fit into everyones tastes.

yes?

for a while, i tried being the savior of all of our time and voting 0's to the really bad stuff just to get it off the board....meanwhile giving praise to the awesome stuff with 5's and pretty much skipping anything i wasn't sure about.

that quickly tanked my average into the mess you see now.
i think i'm still trying to get it above a 1 again.
now when i vote, i truly vote on merit alone, the full 0 thru 5$, but often i don't vote at all when i have stuff in the running....a karma thing, or luck or whatever. (unless a talented soul posts a blog that gets me to go there and vote)
