Maybe it's because you're in the blog forum for a T-shirt design website... so this is kind of a skewed sample.

The thing is, as long as America stays capitalist, there will always be a demand for designers. Unfortunately, a lot of the jobs don't pay as much as say, an engineer. However, if you're GOOD you can get a decent paying job in a nice area.

No. I am not that stupid to think that I could make it as a designer.

But that's just me. I like to do it on the side though.

I work as a graphic designer. There is a lot of work out there, most of it in production, file prep and such. I work in house at a place where we silk screen bottles for shampoo and stuff, it's a lot harder to get in the better jobs where you have the real cool clients and make the big bucks, but you have to work your way up and catch a couple breaks. It's a lot easier to find work then say an illustrator. From what I can see you are very talented and would do well in the field.

Seems like there are a bazillion designers and a handful of design jobs out there. I do a little design, but I'm mostly a graphic artist, and consider myself fortunate to be in the position I'm in. Competition is fierce.

Most of the illustrators on threadless think they are graphic designers too. It's awkward to see. But hey if it makes them happy -- more power to them.

that's the whole reason I'm not ngetting into design, because my friends were always "HAHA, YOU LYK VIDEOGAMES YOU SHOULD DO GRAFFIX DESIGN" and I"m like "...no" it seems like there are a million bazillion people going into graphic design etc. and there's like a couple jobs available...

Plus I have arthritis.

It's those commercials I keep seeing!!!

Can you picture yourself designing blah blah blah? Yeah? Well then you can be a graphic designer!

Yeah, right. From my experience, it's a little tough to get your foot in the door, but if you have talent and all that other stuff, you can deal with the competition. People make competition sound like a bad thing, but really it makes you better.

Well I've worked too many corporate design jobs to ever want to do that again. Yes it's true that competition is fierce if you follow the normal channels, but if you have the determination to try something different then you can succeed.

There's really a lot you can do with a design degree in terms of career paths. I just think that the problem a lot of people have is that they don't want to "pay their dues." You do have to start somewhere, and if it's a garbage position to get your foot in the door then do it. But don't sit still, always push yourself. Become indispensable in every job you take, and always look for something better.

i don't want to be a graphic designer.

i used to want to be an interior designer.
MrDomino
   MrDomino on Jan 29 '07 at 2:06pm
Also, having access to the tools does not make you a designer. Any more than have access to a pencil makes you an illustrator. You will compete with those kids with 'puters at first but real passion for design will carry you past that. So my best suggestion is that you should only pursue design because you genuinely love it, because it drives you. Otherwise you'll never make it through the tough times. And they will be tough.

I work as a design teacher, and at times I wonder, no, actually I often wonder where all the graduates we pump out are going to find work. Most design jobs around here are crap, boring and un creative. It is certainly difficult to find good challenging work in this neck of the woods. Still, design is highly transferrable, and like any industry, if you are half decent, you will get a good job. Of the students I teach, only about 25% are actually interested in design, the rest just seem to be there for the jobs...

From what I've seen, there's a lot of work for web designers, not so much for print.

"Most of the illustrators on threadless think they are graphic designers too. It's awkward to see. But hey if it makes them happy -- more power to them."

Yeah I see alot of that, it's pretty funny. Alot of places after my designs are always surprised when they get the full files and stuff they need within 1 - 2 days when most illustrators are taking 2 weeks or so. I know its obnoxious but I just think graphic designers, given our usual clientele, usually act with more professionalism.

There are dipshits in every industry though.

what is design?

your a designer already, it's just how you apply your knowledge, designers aren't just a group of people working in a studio, they are lateral thinkers that can create vocations never even thought of in the past.

so go get'em tiger!

I was surprised when I went on my first interview for an in house design position and the person I was replacing said I was the only person that brought a portfolio... WTF?!

Now the job wasn't creative and it kinda sucked, but it got my experience level up and I got another job after it, but when hiring my replacement is when I realized how many people assumed they were designers. Bad, bad stuff. One applicants only previous job experience was Popeyes, but she swore she was a designer. Yikes.
bananaphone

Sounds like i should move to where you are, Every job interview I go for I end up in the top 3 out of about 300 applicants. Probably alot of the same kind of stuff too.
melhel86
melhel86 on Jan 29 '07 at 3:25pm
oh I've been there too... it depends on the type of position. A lot of people that were applying for that position were also way over qualified for the job, so those didn't get hired either. I couldn't compete with some people out there... I've been on second interviews and third interviews and then not gotten the job. It takes a while.

i'm a lucky gal and landed an excellent job straight out of school at a small design company where i get to do all kinds of awesome projects. i know i'm lucky, but there are way more jobs out there than most people realize. there's always work if you're willing to do it. i know lots of people who graduated with me who aren't working and say there's no work, but it's not true. there's always freelancing and production jobs. the newspaper here is always running ads for designers. like MrDomino said, you gotta pay your dues. if you're good and not an ass to work with, you'll get a job.
