So I've been working on this sub for a few weeks now...

I have been tweaking & adding things to an image I developed (and posted about) for a mother nature themed piece. I recieved some good feedback about it and I decided it was too... empty.

I have since expanded my idea of 'mother nature' and I am now trying to bring in elements of conflict. Progress of culture vs. Nature. Elements that one would see in construction or urban areas, mixing with those found in nature.

So anyway, enough BS talking about wtf Im trying to accomplish. Please give me as much feedback as you can, I really enjoy hearing what people think - what thye like, dont like, & what might make it better.

Colors are still very flexible - but so far I'm liking these. Here is what I have thus far:

Thanks all.

awesome! unfortunately, all I can think of is:

and:

http://www.threadless.com/product/231/Who_I_Am

I know they are radically different, but in essence, its a similar idea...

True - I feel they all three have unique styles, however. I will agree that they have similar features between them, but I think the styles differ greatly between them.

I have to admit I was somewhat concerned with mine being similar to 'Wandering Spirit' when I first saw it. (After I had got to this point in my design, I checked to see if there were similar printed shirts). But after I looked at it more closely - the message & the style of each is pretty different.

What do other people think? Is mine too similar to the ones staffel has pointed out? I'm curious to find out what others think.

The nature vs culture idea kinda' reminds me of one of my subs.

But, a much different design.

I really like it the design, and I think it looks really cool. But, I wish the elements were related a little more to each other. It just seems kind of a random bunch of things.

Katie, any suggestions on how to tie them in more together? Curretnly, color was my method of relating things together - the 'nature' objects greens and the 'culture' objects pink.

its a really great illustration but stuff like this on tshirts bores me.

I think she means, MCB how having a pretty girl face, a flower, a tree, some wings, and then a bunch of random blobs, conceptually don't make sense together - at least, that's how I interpreted her meaning, and I would agree in THAT context.

but I still think it's beautifully done.

its an okay composition.. however maybe you could be the first person to step it up and create new elements .. the telephone line, wire etc . splatters are all very common. so it might be worthwhile experimenting with new objects that convey the same meanings

it might be best going for 'something' rather than 'everything',

put the girls face in context with what surrounds her etc.

True starr, I agree that the elements are, farily seperate at first glance... but, I think that 'conceptually' in the context of what the design is about, they do make sense together.

The woman is mother nature... or some other woodsy, nature, mythical being. (who happens to have wings in my vision).

The tree represents the forest and a natural element, as do the flowers.

The telephone pole is essentially an urban tree. A man made replacement... housing and carrying information rather than a home to animals.

The dozers - which, granted, may not be as clear as I would like them to be, are the physical embodiement of what is used to alter nature.

The blobs / paint elements represent the marks on the surface in which construction and developement leaves on the world/nature. The pollution, the oil spil, the what have you of the developed world...

I think the elements conceptually are tied together - it may take a while to recognize them as being spawned from a unifying theme, but not every design needs to be open and shut in 2 seconds. Thinking about how things relate is a good thing.

Please take the above as an attempt to explain how I believe the seemingly random elements are tied together - and nothing more. I dont want it to come across as though I am upset or... annoyed, for lack of a better word.

LoveFC, I agree that it might be time to change up the some of the elements and raise the 'bar' so to speak. I do think some of the individual elements in my piece are overdone at times.

I will certainly look at more... unique ways of bringing across the same kind of ideas & themes :)

no, no, i feel you, my friend - and i think you're right, and I wasn't trying to say before that you were throwing together a bunch of nonsense, but rather they only seemed vaguely connected.

the problem that you're going to face is that a) the people who vote on this site aren't going to take the time to really think deep about it, b) they aren't going to want you to explain it, and c) aren't going to want to read a 7 paragraph explanation.

I mean, you have to submit it, regardless, it's beautiful. I still think you take this technique and apply it to a static image. an interesting photograph. a posed photograph (a la what alex ross does) and I think you have a winner. especially if you keep it simple.

I keep thinking, that Hikari by Letter done with THIS technique would be just breathtaking magical.

these sort of internet/clipart/stock image collages I think are really boring and commonplace on threadless. again, I think this is beautiful. perudoesitbetter does the same thing and there's doing it well and just doing it - and I think this falls into the prior category, I just think you can do something REALLY original in this style.

I agree 100% with everything you said Starr. People dont want to read, think, and be analytical for the most part. I do plan to use this style on several ways... I feel its pretty differant style-wise than most of the sub on here, so I would like to develope it more.

Love to hear what more people think too!

The colors are cool and all, but you have to consider what would make someone want to wear this. The reality is that designs that don't have a strong message don't do well becasue no one would want to wear them. If your design takes a paragraph to explain, you've pretty much failed in the delivery department. But that's not to say a design can't be good becasue it looks attractive, and this certainly looks attractive, but I dunno that it works as a tee design because of that.

Ah, hell, just read what everyone commented and starr pretty much hit all my points for me.

It's very nicely executed, but personally, I feel that particular vector style & bitmap halftone is a little old hat these days...(if I see another drip, grunge brush, splatter, art nouveau florish, etc etc, I think I'm gonna need a cup of strong tea & a lie down) ...design trends move so quickly, which is why it pays to develop a personal style rather than jump on the bandwagon. It is a very pretty & well thought out design though.

More constructively, the pink is too highly saturated to my eye, & there's not quite enough tonal dynamic overall...maybe make the pink a bit paler & less saturated, since those elements in pink are secondary, & step up the cyan a bit, making the contrast a bit higher...it will still retain the softness you're going for due to the halftones & fine lines.

Taking the advice thus far, I'll work towards creating a more unified piece that contains more unique elements :) Thanks for all the great feedback guys n gals.

More feedback is welcome, if others wish to comment :)
