funkstart is a 32.55 year old girl, has been a member since April 25, 2006, has scored 2,148 submissions, giving an average score of 1.43, helping 26 designs get printed.
I know this has been complained about before, but I'm seeing some of the lamest subs get such high scores because they involve some sort of pun or joke, and these really amazingly well-designed or just subs that are trully interesting graphically get smashed.

If you're angry about this too, vent here. Give examples!

Here's a good one:

vs.

? (Give me an example!)

(No offense to those involved.)

And by the way, what's with the text bashing? Who became God and said, "Thou shalt have NO TEXT in ANY submission?"

I mean, jeezus.

Hey, jpiatt, I'm not saying I hate your design. In fact, I think it's kinda cute. But mikemills' "Pipe Dream" was gorgeous. It just seems like the general trend is falling way, way away from the graphically interesting.

i think the majority of the voters are non-bloggers and are virtually from a younger age group...

i have more to say but i cant think of it right now...

and i love that facial hair design btw

funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 10:55pm
Oh, the Bronson thing was because of a lost bet to my manpanion. Besides, it got a bad score.

( I was kinda glad it did, too. It was something I designed a few years ago.)

I wish "The Virgin" was a design all by itself... you know, much bigger and with more detail. Have you ever spent hours perusing the world facial hair competition website? My GOD what fantastic sculpture!

pipe dream was one of my favorites, that score was an utter, utter farce
realslimnatey
realslimnatey on Jun 01 '06 at 10:57pm
ive also noticed that most of the interesting graphically designed subs would just look better as a print than on a shirt...
funkstart
funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 10:58pm
BTW-- my little tirade had more to do with the fact that every design I genuinely really, really like it shat on. And can anyone explain the hate for text thing?

So, I can't explain it at all!
slaterock

Pipe dream isn't that great a design actually. I think the execution has to match the quality of the idea, and I think pipe dream falls a tad short. There could've been so much more done with that. I'm finding that with my own designs, that a great illustration doesn't always warrant being printed on a shirt.
funkstart
funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 11:01pm
Maybe it's because the text was REALLY, REALLY SMALL. Don't know.

And thanks again, suspiria. That's the sort of stuff I really like designing... not that Bronson crap. Not that I hate Bronson. I just wish I hadn't lost that damned bet.

realslimnatey on Jun 01 '06 at 11:01pm
yeah because you had words like 'virgin' and 'pervert' on there jeremy! sick fucks like me love that shit!

i dont know, i generally agree with everything thats written up there on this blog, its depressing but you just have to give the audience what they want!

great topic funkstart.

i agree, although, the example above isn't the best. i like jpiatt's sub, but my buddy mikemills did do a fantastic job on pipe dream. pipe dream may have been too sophisticated for this ever younger crowd. i mean, a good number here aren't old enough to "legally" drive a car, vote, or drink alcohol ...much less smoke.

i'm having a harder time designing to this mixed crowd. a one size fits all kind of sub. a sub that appeals to 12 year olds up to mid 40's. men/women, boy/girls, gay/straight.
funkstart
funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 11:03pm
slaterock... not sure I agree. I thought the execution was fine. I think the reason for the poor score might have had more to do with the fact that the whole thrust of the design was unclear.
funkstart
funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 11:06pm
I just used jpiatt's sub as a recent example where an obvious pun or joke gets the vote. It was well executed, though, and I didn't mean to make it seem like I thought it was really sucky and deserved a really LOW score. I meant to point out that I thought both were well-executed, but the joke got the score. Know what I mean?

Yeah, the "one size fits all"... unfortunately, I feel something is lost in the process. Did you see some of the comments on mikemills' latest sub? Check this one out:

"spacerobotfive, at 3:10pm on May 30, 2006

It drives me nuts when people put up ambiguous images with vague titles and don't bother to provide any word of explanation. Making me feel stupid does not encourage me to vote for you."

That makes me never want to submit again.

realslimnatey
realslimnatey on Jun 01 '06 at 11:07pm
pipe dreams execution was good! that illustration would look superb on a shirt!
jpiatt
   jpiatt on Jun 01 '06 at 11:08pm
funk.....you keep saying my shirt is a "Pun"

where are you getting that?

If you're getting it from the title, that's silly, because the title was an afterthought. You can ask any blogger that saw it. I didn't come up with a name till it was completed.
jpiatt
   jpiatt on Jun 01 '06 at 11:09pm
Also, funk....text doesn't work on most shirts because it's not needed. Honestly.

Text should only be used to enhance a design. A lot of the time it doesn't work because it's not needed and make the design less appealing.

I'm still not happy you chose my design to use as an example. Because I feel my design is clever enough to work on a site like threadless. And to even mention T-Shirt hell in regaurds to this type of design pretty much just doesn't work.

Thanks though....I really appreciate this blog. Makes me feel all warm inside.

And no offense to jpiatt, but I think a design like pipe dream would fit a shirt better. The graphic and text for facial hair club is good, but small... and that creates a problem for a t-shirt design. Not a terrible, horrible, irreparable problem that would make this a bad t-shirt, but might make it less striking than a larger graphic.

Oh, jpiatt, I didn't say your design was a pun. I was referring to the many, many pun subs that I see every day. Yours was a joke. (And I don't mean "Man, that sub was a JOKE," as in, it was BAD.)

Yes, I know what a pun is!

And don't feel attacked! I used your design as a GOOD example of a joke sub! Maybe I should have used one of the countless star wars subs instead... GOD I am sick of those...

I should have been clearer. For that, I apologize. Really.

i think the text and graphics work fine for the facial hair design, i dont want anyone reading 'pervert' on my shirt from far away! it makes people want to look at it longer and say, hey...thats a funny shirt!
jpiatt
   jpiatt on Jun 01 '06 at 11:16pm
Yeah. I just think you picked a bad example to point out what you're trying to say. I mean, I'm biased obviously.

Also, if you're looking for only serious shirts with great art on them...that's great and all, but it also would limit the customer base. Some people would never wear artsy shirts. So you gotta think of it from threadless's eyes.
funkstart
funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 11:17pm
Maybe I'm just angry that every sub seems to have to have a definite POINT to get printed. For example, I really like le_hell's designs, just for the surreal quality. But they seem to get pretty low scores.
streetwise
   streetwise on Jun 01 '06 at 11:17pm
jman, with a 3.08 and 113 comments, i'd just kick back, smoke some mary jane, and wait for the threadgods to give you a ring. that's got print me bitch written all over it.

realslimnatey, you have a point. But I'm a girl, and I've had the creepy 40-year-old guy come up to me and say, "Heeeey, what's your shirt say?" and I stand there all uncomfortable while he slowly reads it, and I'm not sure whether I'm being violated in some way or if he really, trully cares what the damned thing says.

I think every girl has had a moment like this. It's unsettling!
kayceislost
kayceislost on Jun 01 '06 at 11:19pm
why were you using his as a GOOD example if you were comparing something good getting a bad score... compared to something... good? getting a good score?

huh?
realslimnatey
realslimnatey on Jun 01 '06 at 11:20pm
oh, and in jeremys defense...even though this really isnt a war...

he blogged about that design on here, and ways to improve it through the people of threadless...it originally started with bigger faces and larger text...but people kept asking for more and more!

he gave the people what they wanted...and im sure glad he didnt give us all that herpes simplex he has on his bottom lip!
jpiatt
   jpiatt on Jun 01 '06 at 11:20pm
I'm not upset. I'm really not. I just honestly think you picked a bad example.

I really don't think my Facial Hair shirt has a POINT at all, once again. It's just a collection of weird facial hair and I've given names to them....where's the point there?

I've always found the design quite random.
funkstart
funkstart on Jun 01 '06 at 11:22pm
True, I should try to see it from a marketing standpoint. But there are just so many t-shirt printing websites out there-- and so many just print "funny" shirts! I would think that threadless could corner the market on the more "designer-y" ones. I mean, I think that they kind of did. I'm just hoping that they try to continue to have a good balance between the clever and funny and the graphically interesting.

(And jpiatt, I could yours among the clever. Clever! See? I'm trying to make things up to you!)
