about This is not a Pipe

When I came up with the idea for this shirt I have to admit I laughed out loud to myself. I like the mix of old school meets art education and the fact that not everyone gets it makes it even more interesting to me.

René Magritte is by far my most favorite surrealist artist. I was awe struck by his work when I saw it on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992 (only the third time his art has been on display in NYC). That coupled with the fact that I have love gaming since the early days of Atari and still do at *cough*32+*cough* years old... Well lets just say I got a 'warped' sense of humor. Get it? Warped? Like a warp pipe in Mario.. anyone? *clears throat*

I'm so happy it got printed. I love threadless, I love this community and I love the talent around here. From day one I was thrilled to be involved with such a diverse group of artist and art appreciators. I'm honored for the opportunity to have been selected as a winner. Thank you everyone and thank you Threadless!!!

I LOVE THIS DESIGN! I must tell you, I'm an art history + french double major and this is like, PERFECT! Pity I didn't buy it when there were abundant BUT this is definitely going to get reprinted so I'll snatch it then.

I know all about Magritte, but I still don't really get it...can someone explain it to me? The problem may be that I was never into video games. It looks like a freaky flower on top of a gift-wrapped box to me. Is the point that it's just a really random image coupled with the Magritte reference?

(I don't mean to criticize - I'd just like to understand it! Thanks)

Hey! I get the Magritte reference, and I was wondering if the plant was a reference to Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors. Because if it was, that would make my life. And if it isn't, well that's okay too because I still love this shirt.

i wasn't reading blogs during the hoohah surrounding this shirt's release but i can't imagine why people would bash it -- this is a fantastic idea for a shirt! i love it. magritte is my favorite artist... and i'm sure he'd have loved it too.

A little fact that might prevent people from buying this shirt (probably just the nerds). Actually, it probably won't.. but..! the actual pipe used in this shirt translates to "conduite" in French. So, it really isn't a picture of a "pipe" either (the French word for the smoking pipe). It's a picture of a "conduite". Sorry to break some hearts out there..! but you'll probably just look at it and say "well, no one will know that it isn't "pipe" in French... so I'll still wear it..!" but still.. awesome shirt, i love the idea

AH! I was looking up Magritte today on the recommendation of a friend, and found that painting and it just CLICKED in my head and I was like TWO YEARS AGO I SAW THIS SHIRT OMFG. And now I get it. Bravo. Hurrah! So excited.

Truth be told I like this shirt because of the "Mario" reference. I had no idea what the words meant. I set out on a crusade to find out. After doing so I must say this shirt is hilarious. I had no idea it had such a deep meaning. I must have it NOW!!!

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but "ceci n'est pas une pipe" literally means, this is not a "smoking" pipe in french, or if you have a naughty mind, it means this is not a bl*w j*b......ahem ahem......fell free to delete my post if it's not appropriate. Sorry. It should have read "ceci n'est pas un tuyeau"

It means 'this is not a pipe' Its an art joke based on the surrealist artist Magritte, steve the great's showed the original up there ^^

First, let me say--I LOVE the shirt, and understood it instantly! Magritte is a kindred of mine for sure, but the other reason I'm blogging is this: the gal featured wearing the shirt could almost be my twin. A colleague of mine at work saw her wearing the "Pigeons are rats with wings" tee and thought it WAS me. Now that I see she bought this one, I'd love to e-meet her, just to see what else our ancestral genes may predispose us to! So, if anyone knows her... I don't want to poop on the party, or anything, but I'm like 99% sure that "pipe" in French means "blow job," not pipe. Which is fine, but it may or may not change the intended meaning of the shirt. Or maybe that's what you were going for. I don't know. Just thought I'd throw that out there. It should be "un tuyau" or "une conduite." Wow, I'm really being that girl right now. Sorry. Turns out I'm a pretentious dick. My bad. I love the shirt though. Perhaps even more, with the dirty undertones.
