I don't know why I'm blogging about this but I just (like just) got my notice at work which sucks big style! I work as a brand designer in an architectural firm and they like most have been pretty hard hit over the past 12mths. So far we've had 4 sets of redundancies with a loss of 35 staff so I guess I've done well to last this long.

Still blows!~ I've got 4 wks work to do which buys me some time to figure things out - whats next? Maybe I can draw the dole and just sub here on Threadless - can't see that paying the mortgage! Well thanks for listening and letting me have a whinge now I've got to go back and tell the wife - maybe I might fuck-off around Australia for a year and when I come back the market might have recovered! Watch this space...

Now you have plenty of time to masturbate and eat boiled eggs. Don't complain

That totally sucks! A few people have been made redundant at my work place lately, and the mood is pretty sombre. We've been promised that there wont be any more, but you just never know.

Hope you find something soon. I understand the pain of mortgage repayments.

What part of Oz are you from? If you go on your Australian tour, stop in at Adelaide. Might be fun to meet some aussie threadless peeps...

aww that sucks. You have my sympathies. I'm also a designer (although in the fashion accessories sense) and was laid off January 2008 and have yet to find a replacement job.

The shock will fade quickly. At least you've got 4 weeks of work to keep busy and plan for the inevitable. I got my notice on a friday and it was like 'see ya don't let the door hit you on the way out'

Bummer man. If you drop in to Sydney you avoid King's Cross, now you can't afford all that drunken debauchery. Good luck though.

Thanks Guys - a few beers later & I'm determined to turn a negative into a positive! As pyr4lis said @ least I've got 4wks work and I'm not out on the street. I can get my portfolio up to scratch, launch a site try get some freelance work and if there is none I am quiet honestly going to pack up the family and travel around Oz working where I can doing whatever comes along and sub'in like the clappers on Threadless - the Missus is quiet excited about this little plan as we can rent our house out and let someone else worry about the mortgage - it will be great for the kids as well - maybe there's light @ the end of the tunnel sure beats masturbating and eating boiled eggs ! - time will tell I guess the main thing is I'm quiet excited about the next little chapter in life so thanks to everyone for all the above & I'll hopefully there's more to come...

That sucks, but good thing you're able to make a positive out of this. Submitting more here could help your portfolio too and get some more work rolling in. And travelling around Australia could be great fun.

I feel your pain dude- laying off people seems to be the flavour of the month. I know a few people (including myself) that have been given the arse from work. I've been made redundant from 3 jobs in the past year and a bit- it certainly doesn't do your morale any good :(

Good to see that things are looking up for you though! Back to boiled eggs and masturbation for me! Actually, just the latter- I can't afford eggs

That sucks but you seem to be a talented dude. Take the trip, everyone needs a trip to sort things out. With your set of skills you won't be out of a job for long!

thanks guys - sorry to hear some of you are in a similar position (or lack there of) but everything happens for a reason so hopefully it will be a good one! Also posionberry I hadn't even considered going back to the uk but there you go more opportunity! I'm really getting sold on the idea of 12mths round Oz so Jellyrush when I get my first gig I'm going to buy you some eggs you'll need to keep up your energy with all that masturbating! Thanks again guys for your show of support :)

Cheers Yeoh & Co!

Its official guys! The day after my notice which I must say I saw coming as we've lost 40 staff & everyones walking around twiddling their thumbs with boredom. We have decided - that is myself, my wife Megan my 2 kids Riley 5 & Laila 3 and my 5mth old border collie dog Guinness are going to rent the house out and travel around Oz for 6-12mths. We're going to do home schooling, I can freelance and do any jobs that come along on the trip, do alot of fishing and see everything there is to see in this amazing country I now call home.

My folks who moved out here a few yrs back from Ireland have just come back from a trip around Oz in their campervan and their more than happy 4 us to us it on our little adventure, we'll probably hook up our little runaround car on the back which we can use for storage and to get around when we're parked up. So we're good to go, there's supposedly heaps of jobs as you go around ranging from fruit picking to helping farmers out with cattle and fencing and general stuff in some of the flood stricken regions up north. I really think this will be great for the kids not too mention us as a family unit and the stress of not having a mortgage or a new job (if I ever got 1 & could hold it in a recession) is going to be great and a once in a life time experience! Bring it on! You'll probably see me alot more here on Threadless as well with all that down time and creative juices building up 9-5 so be warned! Thanks again guys & I'll keep you's posted...

I'm glad you've got a plan and that your family is so supportive. If I didn't have my boyfriends support I don't know what I'd do.

But it sounds like you've got a great plan to weather the storm. Honestly it even sounds exciting.

I wish you the best of luck!

just a quick up date on my current jobless status for anyone interested - its been a mth now since we hit the road and we are slowly making our way South from Brisbane (currently in Caves Beach and Hunter Valley). We sold our family cars and bought a small Suziki Vitara which we're towing on the back of a 26 ft campervan so its a step up form my VW Kombi days. So far its been unreal as we re-ajust our lives into the confined space of our van (2 kids a dog and my Missus) thankfully the landscape is more than big enough and there's plenty of escape!!!

I'm also hoping to sub a lot more here on Threadless in the coming 12mths as we travel around Oz but will probably be entering under another account and my Australian/Irish alias "Paddyroo".

My first entry is up for voting so if you get the time I'd love to hear from you guys and if you know any must sees around Oz make sure you let us know - I don't want any regrets!

That sounds awesome!
I wish I was still on Oz. Traveller tip: as you're heading down the coast and you get a little bit south of Byron, like, an hour and a half, you should DEFINITELY stop in Yamba. It's small and gorgeous and lovely. And the YHA there is amazing and really family friendly and awesommmmme. etc etc etc.

I'm jealous that you live in oz. I want to be there. Enjoy your travels!

All about me
Hi I'm a graphic designer originally from Ireland, I have a HND and BA Hons Degree in Graphic Design. After living & working in London for a few years I moved to Sydney Australia & now live in Queensland with my wife & 2 kids & a dog.
