Pollock and Van Goh

Kris Kuksi, he makes epic sculptures entirely out of found objects, namely miniatures. I think he is the most brilliant artist ever, I could stare at each of his pieces for hours.

One of my life goals is to own one of his works

Kris Kuksi

This is a piece I made as an homage to his work: "Kuksi Crown"

Mightor - no worries... to the right of the comment box, just click and add the pic's url.

I'm with you on Pollock and Van Gogh. Last year on my travels, I was thrilled to see some of their work at various galleries...

Jackson Pollock

Vincent Van Gogh

Victor - awesome stuff, man. I hadn't heard of him before. Thanks for sharing. And really great tribute piece you've done as well!

Thanks Simon!

I used to go to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, so I had infy access to the museum and had the pleasure of seeing some Van Goghs and Pollocks in real life on a daily basis. "Cafe at Night" is easily one of my favorite paintings of all time, as is "At the Moulin Rouge" (hence my name, in part) by Toulouse Lautrec

toulouse-lautrec-at-the-moulin-rouge

which, incidentally, I also made an homage to, haha

Ringling-LaLautreciene

I used to be really skeptical about Pollock, but seeing them in real life really is fascinating, they have a certain energy about them...

I envy those who can travel who see their original works..

No probs, Mightor! Just make sure you right click the image and copy its actual address rather than the webpage address. ;-) Really nice works by that artist too!

Already loving all these recommendations!

Victor, that's awesome. I've never had any formal education in art but perhaps will strive to do so... even just a mentor would be great. Absolutely love that painting by Toulouse Lautrec... the colours, lighting, atmosphere, expressions... so good. And I can empathise about Pollock too... I'd never warmed much to his stuff until I saw it in the flesh at the MOMA in NYC. Literally sat and stared at one piece for almost half an hour... it was mesmerising.

This piece by Georges Seurat has always impressed me, I swear I saw it in London but from what I gather its in Chicago now? I am so confused perhaps it was "Bathers at Asnières" :S

oh fair play, I remember having to study it in class then seeing how huge it was in person, it was really something special, its hard to imagine having these art nerd moments but when you get there its easy to be amazed by these things

Henri Cartier Bresson is a classic. He's a big reason why I wanted to be a photographer. His photography was just.... whoa. I love the idea of the Decisive Moment.

Jeff : oh no you didn't... hahahaha... can you believe that was 8 years ago? Shit.

Jaclyne : nice find. I particularly like the second and third. The flawless tones and spotlighting is intriguing.

Aaron : yeah, brilliant stuff. I've not seen that particular painting of his... didn't realise it was so big, as you said. Totally empathise with the art nerd moments - there were many works I'd never particularly liked, but in person it's such a wholly different experience.

g3rpander : agreed! For obvious reasons.

Adrienne : Love these. I have a feeling I may have a book with his photography in it. It's hard not to love a lot of the French photography from that era.

Alvaro : I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know about him. Will be sure to check him out!

Elin : yeah, cool creepy stuff! Particularly like the first two.

Cheers for all the additions. Keep them coming!

Oh and Randy... never seen Jim Lambie's stuff but it's rad! Looks like I tapped into some of his rainbow colour moonshine when I did some of my design work ages ago. Haha.

Damien Hirst

The title of his signature piece alone "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" sold me on it. I still remember seeing it for the first time and being blown away the moment I saw it. There was nothing obscure or pretentious here... this was art at its most direct and visceral - in this case, a freakin' great white shark in a tank; a direct confrontation and provocation that challenged you to reflect on your own mortality and the fragility of life in general... although the title counter-cuts this all somewhat by calling into question the possibility of even grappling with such an unfathomable concept.

I plan to age disgracefully, Jeff. :-)

Eric, thanks for the post, man. I really like your take on it. It's impossible to deny Damian Hirst stake in the contemporary art world. Gotta respect what he's achieved. Having said that though there's something that Stanley Kubrick said, "The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good" and with that in mind, I'm not really sure how Hirst's work makes me feel... still yet to see it in person, so perhaps that would influence perspectives.
