My Threadless.com Submission

After much deliberation, with a pretty even divide between preference on the final design, it came down to a toss of a coin. Thanks to all those who put in their two cents... hope to see them turn into $5! lol.

Cheers!

i like the colored section
but it looks too busy. there's no distinction between the water and the trees. and the water isn't justified without color.
great start.

Wow...I really like this alot.
I wish there were more really huge designs.

Ai, I should mention the colouring isn't complete yet... bit off with the fairies right now. Just about to hit 3:30am. lol. But yes, plan to do as you said, and give the water some colour and such. Thanks for the comment.

this is cool! i guess the only problem is the 14" x14" rule
francobolli
   francobolli on Jun 20 '06 at 12:34pm
vulcan: thanks! There's not enough ay. So much waste of good fabric. heh.

tom: thanks mate! I'd hope they'd be a little lenient with it. Noticed a few designs have been printed despite the 14x14 rule.

I actually like it the way it is at the mo. It looks a hell of a lot nicer than the real Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia.

Tomie on Jun 20 '06 at 7:28pm
wow, this looks really, really good. I wish the lower part of the design was as organic as the superior part where the sun is.
Just a little flat, that's all.
Either way it's fantastic. Congrats!

   thelovefanclub on Jun 20 '06 at 7:34pm
d3d what is their purpose?

yeah i like this design, reminds me of a secret entrance to a secret surf spot
sonmi

holy crap, please leave some of the plain line art in this. i really love it as is

they're strippers in gold hot pants who feed your parking metre and leave a flyer for their club.

I think only the gold coast has enough balls to get away with strippers wandering the streets in gold bikinis in the daylight.

14 inches is actually kinda large on a shirt, but they seem to print some bigger than this as well.

Nice illo, its coloured enough I think.
montmont
   montmont on Jun 20 '06 at 8:06pm
I think that design would be sweet and still look good at 14 inches.

Wow, I leave the computer for a while and return to this. Thanks for all the kind comments!

Haha, yeah, I wasn't sure if I should name this Surfers Paradise with the relation to the Gold Coast... if only the real Surfers Paradise were like this... with the metre maids of course, d3d. Hehe.

Thanks again and keep an eye on this - will try to get a final draft up soon!

Haha, thanks vulcan! Hope more people like it as much as you!

Yeah, mindtrace, I'm not totally satisfied with it yet... I'm worried it may not be suitable for a shirt because of this.

love meter maids...

from an art perspective it's quite a nice sketch and i agree with sonmi about the lines...

but being a very keen bodyboarder in constant search of crazy ass waves, constantly doodaling crazy ass waves, and having a keen eye for crazy ass waves this doesn't satisfy the purist in me... i'm not loving these bowls... and the perspective of the back surfer is really irritating me!

The design is kinda cool, i like the more coloured version better... but i'd palm it off to the old mal fellas, cause i dont wanna relate to their used and abused scene!

I've got a wave design sitting on the shelf thats a bit different... didn't feel right to post it here... who knows...
see how you do hey...

goodluck:)

holy shit that's awesome!!

threadless usually doesn't accept such large prints though, unless you're planning on gettin invited for select. But they might let it pass as well as it is so great!

thelovefanclub
   thelovefanclub on Jun 21 '06 at 8:47am
i was getting familiar with the lined version without colour, what would also be an effective graphic is if you kept the lines of the waves no colour and just coloured the sun.
5115
5115 on Jun 21 '06 at 8:48am
I agree with sonmi! LEAVE IT HOW IT WAS! Leave the waves in plain lines. (no color) It looks great and helps give it some depth. It makes it seem as if the jungle is in front of the surfer...
francobolli
   francobolli on Jun 21 '06 at 9:03am
Glad you like it, guys!

i carnt spel: mmm... meter maids. lol. I've always been a body boarder myself, until just recently... thought I'd give this standing up thing a go. Love it, but so much more effort than body boarding. You should definitely bring out your design... what have you got to lose ay!

In regards to the design... I've been torn about trying to find a balance between the busy full coloured option and the lesser... I find that it's not really visually balanced without the colour throughout the surf and it doesn't maintain a consistent style. On the other hand, I also like the plain lines by themselves as a number of you have mentioned.... decisions, decisions....

Also, just whipped up a simple line version... just for a comparison and stuff. :-)

Francobolli, the top of the older version fits in with the jungle nicely with just the little bits of color. I would honestly leave it like that...

i think the colors blend the pereption too much. but i like your color choices.

all i can say is that the black in the waves kinda looks like oil.... and that's not really a surfer's paradise.... otherwise... it's awesome!!
eskimopunk
eskimopunk on Jun 21 '06 at 6:04pm
^^i meant that the oil was not a surfer's paradise..... just incase that wasn't clear....

Thanks heaps for all the comments!

Had a go at it without any colours there at all, but still not really convinced that it works better that way. :-/ I've tried to subdue the top half a bit anyway in the latest preview.

i carnt spel: it's therapeutic ay! Where abouts do you surf? I went to Surfers Paradise last week and it was shithouse. Much prefer the area from Snapper to Yamba.

eskimopunk: lol, I was wondering if someone would mention that. Fixed up the oil spill for now! :-)

bananaphone: If only it looked like that! Surfers has turned into the Aussie Miami. :-/

I'm from Phillip island in Vico...

My locals are express point, Berrys point, Powlet river, seconds, super tubes, Pyramid Rock... and i head down the coast for whites, Murrels, airports, Luna Park which has gotten pretty famous and is NUTS!, Nungan, Aussie Pipe, Gilhoteens pretty reg...

My girlfreinds dad lives in Main beach on the goldi so i'm there pretty often... The points look nuts but i've never scored em... Love Stradi the Zone, and D-bah is ok but the crowds are nuts.... and i've seen sick pics of yamba

the third one where it's half coloured looks best i reckon. are there any topless girls in there anywhere? i was in surfers a couple of weeks ago and there were tits out even though it was cold.
francobolli
   francobolli on Jun 21 '06 at 10:08pm
I've heard good things about the surf down there! Bit bloody cold though, no?
Yamba is awesome. Spent 3 weeks down there one summer and just had sweet waves the whole time, even on the off days. Here's a few pics I took while I was there -

the main beach

angourie beach

trekking down to a point

one day I won't have to use photoshop... lol
