i really like Thom Yorke's response to Liam Gallagher slamming him...

Liam talked about how he didn't go to art school and how Thom is an elitist and no one understands him...

Thom's response was this... "I did go to art school. It taught to respect other artists."

i'd say thom's response nails ben to a t.

his asshole attitude ruins any potential he has an artist, really.

haha, wow people actually responded to this one. Shame I didn't notice until now.

I didn't say it was bad. It's a super trendy style. Just not really into it. At least Thom Yorke and the rest of Radiohead put themselves out there to try new things.

Nor did I ever say I was a better artist.

What are you stalking this thread?

So, I'm not entitled to an opinion if I don't wet myself with praise over someone's artwork? It's my blog. I'll say what I want. Trendwhore may not have been the nicest way to critisize it but it's the truth and I stand by that. I'm not gonna pull my punches but if I need to justify why I'm throwing them then I will.

But you're the one judging me based on things I never said.

dude, 'meh, trendwhore' if you want to know, reeks of arrogance and self-entitled 'knowledge' of what is 'trendy' and not. perhaps by explaining yourself i won't read to far into your presumptions assaults.

you're type is too common. i must eradicate you.

staling this thread?

it's a blog that popped up which i remember you not having enough balls to respond after calling out someone's art.

you're a coward, at best.
Kame
Kame on May 31 '07 at 3:43pm
Eradicate me? What, with your Death Star?

Balls have nothing to do with it. It was a passing comment on a piece of art I wasn't impressed with. Frankly, I didn't think anyone would even notice it. And something I promptly forgot about even posting. I'm not saying I could do better. In truth, I probably couldn't. But those designs are a dime-a-dozen. The style is just terribly common. Some are well done, others not so much. I felt this fit into the latter. If I liked the design better, I wouldn't have said anything - but it still wouldn't change the fact that it lacks originality and is just clammoring aboard the bandwagon.

Trendy is like Pop music. It's crazy popular and lacks substance. Everyone knows that. There's no arrogant, enlightened knowledge to know what's trendy and what isn't. Just look around.

You get all hot and bothered because I called the DESIGN trendwhore but would you react the same way if I said the same thing about, say, Paris Hilton? Just wondering.

sorry to do this publicly:

Frankly, I didn't think anyone would even notice it. And something I promptly forgot about even posting.

yeah, the old, 'jeeze, i didn't think that by lobbing a grenade into a house it would actually harm people' defense is ridiculously played out; remember, ignorance is not a defense.

If I liked the design better, I wouldn't have said anything

as i said earlier, it's easy to say something stinks, right? look, it was so easy to do you forgot you did it! but the point is, rise above it. do you call your mom every time you see a piece of animal feces lying in a grassy area to say, 'mom there's shit here'? no, you just continue on your way and pretend it never happened.

There's no arrogant, enlightened knowledge to know what's trendy and what isn't. Just look around

you arrogant trendwhore. by "looking around" you think you know what's going on? you just a reflection of a reflection aren't you? just mindlessly accepting and propagating bullshit.

You get all hot and bothered because I called the DESIGN trendwhore but would you react the same way if I said the same thing about, say, Paris Hilton? Just wondering.

a design which someone worked hard on, and a whore who tries to give guys hard ons, is so far apart in the spectrum i'm not even sure they'd be in the same galaxies of relevence. i would imagine that paris' parents, if they are in fact human, take a shot every time someone says how much of a whore their daughter is; much like a designer would feel when some idiot attacks their art.

it's best to not say anything, if you're you.

Oh, sorry, I actually work now and then while I'm at work. And I was just going to let this slide as there's no point in arguing this but my curiosity got the best of me and I had to check up.

Yeah, I didn't think anyone would notice. Honestly, I expected it to be lost amidst all the other blogs and I figured anyone that did read it would ignore it. Is that an excuse? No, but it's the truth and my frame of mind at the time. I've been here close to 4 years and have posted 3 comments. Blogging obviously isn't a high priority for me. Why I did it then? Who knows. Maybe I was bored. Maybe I felt like trying to get more involved. Maybe I was having a bad day and felt like being an ass. Maybe I didn't think it would cause such a volatile reaction. But neither of my other posts received any attention so why should I have believed that this one would either?

And yes, by "looking around" I feel I do get a pretty good sense of what's going on. It's called "observing." It's how people learn. It's been that way for a couple years I think.

Good call on the Paris thing by the way. I mean she probably is a whore (except I don't think she gets paid - maybe favors for favors though). Yet, that's not what I asked. I said "TRENDwhore." I mean, lets be fair. You can't very well compare someone's sexual behavior to social fads (unless that fad is sleeping around I guess). Really I was just curious if you were holding a double standard. Paris is the kind of person to wear all the latest fashions and get in to all the coolest clubs all without forming an actual opinion about them. Personally, I'd call that pretty trendwhorish behavior but you kinda missed the mark and called her a whore so I'm not really sure what to make of your opinion on that one. Maybe it just means that you have a hard time listening.

So, looking back, yeah, it was an asshole thing to say. It was certainly out of character. (Maybe I had Peter Griffin on my mind: "Attention shoppers! Testicles. That is all.") But do I regret it? No. It may have been blunt, without class and flat-out disrespectful but it's still my opinion on the matter. It's not something I make a habit of doing or intend to do in the future. But people need to hear is straight sometimes.

I'm curious whom or what you're defending though? The design? The artist? Both? If it's the design, well then I'm sorry but it's the truth. It's a very clichéd, trendy design. They have been for a few years now. It was cool when it came out but it's just been over used and there's plenty of examples on Threadless to that very affect.

If you're defending the designer then let me get one thing straight. I never called the artist a trendwhore. Certainly a poor choice of words on my part and an easy connection to assume but that was never my intention.

Nigel is a terrific designer/artist. His website and portfolio are a testament to that. He is obviously very good at that particular style and has had success creating popular art. Obviously, this design is no exception as it's been well received here. Personally, I think he's better than that shirt though. The only original element to it is the fact that he created it with his own idea in mind. It may represent a facet of his work but it certainly doesn't represent him as a whole, nor do I think it represents that particular aspect of him very well. He's done other works in similar styles that are much more respectable. Other pieces that are much more original and with more personality. There's nothing about the design the holds any weight. The color of the fabric itself is trendy. Even a darker, more classic color would have lent it more credibility. You could call it abstract I suppose but somehow I doubt there's any message behind it. It doesn't seem to try to convey any feeling or emotion.

Artists deal with criticism. It's part of the job and the only way you get any better. If you constantly have your ego stroked then you wallow in mediocrity and don't challenge yourself to do better. To prove others wrong. I pull designs out of my ass all the time and they look like it. Then someone slaps me, tells me it looks like shit and I take a fresh look at things. Take a few steps back and start over. I've submitted one design to Threadless and no one liked it. I wasn't thrilled by their reaction but I didn't cry about it. I read some of the more insightful comments and realized I missed the mark. I didn't effectively communicate the emotion I was trying to convey. Doesn't mean I'll never submit anything again. If he did see my comment, I'm sure he dealt with it his way. Chances are, he would have just brushed it off as meaningless anyway. If I knew the guy personally, I certainly would have expressed more opinion and given more insight but that's the beauty of a stranger's critique. It's honest and without reservation. Just a, "that sucks," and you're supposed to fix it from there. If, for some reason, Nigel is unable to accept harsh criticism, then he'll never survive as a designer. Somehow, I doubt this isn't the case though.

So lambast me all you like. Call me an ass and post stupid pictures. If I had the emotionally integrity of a filo dough I might care. I might throw one jab but at least I can stand up to the ten kicks - and still have enough sense to work it out in the end - except, I don't like coffee.

that was pretty good.

my beef wasn't with you bashing the design. and if you wanna bash an artist another time, go right ahead; it's your right to speak your opinion as i'm sure you don't live in a fascist state or communistic nation where free speech is the devil.

it was a cheap shot and it's too common around here and when i see someone take a cheap shot i call them out on it. i feel that if people will voice their opinion, someone gets to play with that opinion with their own. i'm pretty sure that's how blogs work.

anyway, your dear jon letter was nice and i feel like were best friends now and that's awesome.
