I deleted it because Jeff has terrible reading comprehension and was taking the blog in a direction that would be unhelpful. He's proving his lack of class and immaturity in this blog as well.

ok ok, I get that there is friction here

but see this is the problem with any sort of direct tracing, be it more detailed stuff or just outlines. There is always going to be someone out there to photoshop overlays and show the world

IT'S TOO PAINFUL TO RISK

I say we just draw it all.

and like the elephant one, that is one hell of an elephant photo - someone had to actually stare down an elephant to take that picture. It aint right to copy it, reference YES copy NO

this is why I draw on paper, thick opaque paper.

So many artists trace. Who cares? Not much you can do about it. Do something else and stand out.

If you are going for a realistic look of a real world thing you are kinda screwed no matter what. If you draw it too well it appears traced. If you do a sloppy job, people will likely think you just suck at art and/or may not even know what its supposed to be. The only way I see around that is to just draw a "pretty good" version of the object and hope that its good enough.. while at the same time hoping nobody finds a real world reference at the same angle from which they can claim you stole from. Then you have to go through the whole "throwing insults and telling the accuser they don't know what they are talking about" rigmarole.

I'm assuming this is about a blog that was about the ethics of tracing things?
ISABOA

there is no way you can draw a picture of an elephant which would line up exactly with the contours and lines of an elephant photo without it being traced...... IT"S IMPOSSIBLE

don't matter angle or whatever, to say that one shouldn't draw anything too well because then it will look traced is rubbish

and yes, most everyone traces, this is true. And I am not saying there is anything necessarily wrong with that.. it's a personal thing. BUT it does suck to have someone take umbrage with your work due to a perceived tracing.

ALSO I hate seeing shirts or drawings with this bear in them

90% of bear shirts are this bear

I said appears traced. But even still, Im fairly confident I could draw that sub and have the lines line up. Surely that's not impossible.

I agree. People should draw how/what they like. It's just unfortunate that along with that will come accusations every once in awhile.

resistance made a blog about tracing

i asked him what his view was on tracing over images as vectors

he said it was the opposite of tracing

spacesick claimed to have used my penis as a reference for his #1 DAD tree

i posted that gif up there

he deleted blog

Ah.

I used to trace things from my coloring books and told my dad I drew them, and he thought I was an artistic genius.

That's all I've got.

duracell - you've got me there. if the goal was to replicate the photo/illo as closely as possible without tracing it would probably be pretty close - although i think it would be "off" more than you think it would be. I think we need a SCIENTIST to figure this out

Yeah, this is pretty much why I deleted the blog and why I don't really come here that often anymore. I deleted the blog knowing a new blog would be created and that Jeff would be one of the first to comment and repost the image. Why? Because like so many other encouraging and welcoming members of this community (sarcasm), he's kind of a jerk (probably not in person, but on here he definitely can be). Blogs that attempt to be serious, when started by a less known and less popular person like myself, end up completely ignored or just spiral into irrelevance or arguments. My blog was quickly becoming a hybrid, with a mix of unhelpful images/jokes from spacesick combined with Jeff starting an argument.

Jeff basically misread the intention of my blog, and asked me if I had the same "view point" of image to vector tracing (I never put forth a view point, I asked what people thought). I said I wasn't trying to call anyone out and that getting an outline from an image isn't the same as tracing the details of a photograph (because it isn't). Instead of continuing the discussion about the rightness/wrongness of tracing, ya know the intention of the blog, he came at me again, with a newer and more direct animated gif of my design. His intention was obviously to start an argument, that was going to and had already derailed discussion.

In defense of my design, each of those subs are from different images found on the web, and I made some pretty significant changes to the outlines. I also added my own textures and details which removed them even further from the originals. My original blog was about tracing over photographs with respect to details. It's the difference between tracing an entire image of Darth Vader, buttons, shading, details, etc.... and just using the image for a Darth Vader silhouette. One is clearly more separated from the original. And my design didn't get printed because of the artistic merit, the idea/joke is what won people over. The individual sub images helped make up the design, as opposed to the elephant examples that I gave where the central image and focus of the design is a traced photograph.

All about me

"The entire cosmos is a cooperative. The sun, the moon, and the stars live together as a cooperative. The same is true for humans and animals, trees, and the Earth. When we realize that the world is a mutual, interdependent, cooperative enterprise -- then we can build a noble environment. If our lives are not based on this truth, then we shall perish." --Buddhadasa Bhikkhu

"All authority of any kind, especially in the field of thought and understanding, is the most destructive, evil thing. Leaders destroy the followers and followers destroy the leaders. You have to be your own teacher and your own disciple. You have to question everything that man has accepted as valuable, as necessary.

...truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or coerce people along a particular path
