My Music, Your Designs!

Hey guys,

My name is Gaven and I'm in a Christian Metal band (pause for chuckles) called A New Day Has Dawned. We're in dire need of merchandise designs but are totally strapped for cash. We'll be praying that someone will see this and give us some designs to use! A free shirt will definitely be coming your way!

Good luck on your search! I pretty much stopped doing designs for bands (with one exception). It seems like a lot of bands tend to be very picky and yet not know quite what they want. Maybe you should also post what you guys are looking for, design-wise.

The only thing we ask is to keep in mind that we are a Christian band, so even though a lot of metal bands have upside-down crosses or corpses eating each other, we'd like to steer clear of that kind of imagery.

Caitiff, it helps if you list styles/imagery that you like. Think of specific album covers and such to use as examples. It's not fair to an artist to just blindly work on something, spend a lot of time on it, and then have you guys not like it so much.

Haha, guess I gotta bust out the metal cliches,

Skulls, graves, angels, big pirate-y ships, crests, birds with big wings, grungy beat up looking graphics.

Those are just what I came up with off the top of my head.

This guy does really good work. But never hire him, he just takes your money and runs. Otherwise I wouldn't be posting this.

not to sound too harsh, but asking for free design work from people you dont know is kind a joke. its insulting actually to designers everywhere.

would you have the balls to ask a recording studio whom you have never spken to before, for free studio time?

What exoticrobotic says is true... if someone is a serious designer/artist, you need to treat them as a professional. There's a chance someone might take you up on your offer so they can add stuff to their portfolio. But don't be surprised if their work isn't as good as you hoped.

I'm just asking for help. I got ripped off so now I'm in between a rock and a hard place trying to make the best of a bad situation. There are a lot of jerks in this world, but hopefully there are some Good Samaritans who won't just pass me by on the other side.

Yeah I did, I tried to report him to Myspace and PayPal, but unfortunately due to the fact that art isn't a tangible item (i.e. You can't hold it in your hands) their anti-theft rules don't apply. I needed a design for shirts to print for our show on March 31st but all I got was a life lesson.

My design fee is $75 to $150, depending on what you're looking for.

$40 down the drain. That might not sound like a lot, but thats a full days wages for a Starbucks Latte-Boy like me. I'm really (I don't want to say desperate so how about...) in need for something. Anything you guys could do would be great.

that guys myspace is a joke. i looked at his FAQ blog, and he comes off as an arrogant dickhead.

that sucks man. $40 is dirt cheap for a tshirt design, but would still suck to see it go down the drain.

Haha, I would avoid the word "handout". Maybe "empathy" or "compassion" or even "pity". I just got set back to square one in a process that takes about as long to complete as I have days left on my calendar. Thanks again for reading.

If you really want a decent design, ask for the money from your parents or friends. If they believe in you.. in what you want to accomplish, they should help you out. I'm sure it's a lot easier to ask them then to ask strangers for their "empathy" or compassion.

If you need to get paid I'll pay you when I can, depending on how much it is. I just have to get 25 shirts printed in 2 weeks that I don't even have the designs for.
