Does anyone know of some good tools or tips to get started with shirts?

Great idea > Great execution, but if you combine the two you have a winning combination.

I also like Wacom's tablet since I'm used to drawing with a pen/pencil rather than a mouse. It helps. I'm addicted to CS2, but I heard that there are some other good programs out there for graphic design.

Are there any major differences between the Photoshops, CS and Illustrator and whatever other ones are out there.

You should goto Adobe.com and see if there are some demo's that you can download. Then you can actually try out the programs and see what will suit your needs the best.

if you have never studied graphic design b4 try looking up some articles on gestalt principles.

this will help with design principles in general.

other than that you def. wann use illustrator or photoshop, they are the best professional programs for design. any good design book or magazine (print and HOW are good ones ) can be inspirational .

Hope that helps!

draw on paper first... get ideas down... only use the computer for the final product... but use illustrator when you use the computer...

also, make LOTS and LOTS of designs... for logos, make something like 15-20 different logo designs... for other stuff just do a bunch of different things...

in graphic design you always want your work to have like a meanning... so when designing something for a company, find out all you can about the company... the reason why it has it's name, the work it does, any possable slogans... and get a feel for the company so you can design whatever it needs...

and make your logos bold so they stay in your memory... possably start by writing down all the companies who's logos you remember and then look at the logo and see why you remember it...

try to start with only black and white if you can because the color can just get distracting while you should be working on the design and the meanning of the design... and illustrator is the best for trying out new colors so maybe while designing make some notes as to what colors you want and then when you put it in illustrator then try out different colors...

I never drew anything with pencil and paper and I'm doing ok.

*looks at subs' scores*

My advice is that you work in pencil and paper first.

thumbnailing or at least planning out a design in your head will always save you time when you begin to produce the peace. It will also help you figure out problems with the design itself before you get too far into the project.
