I was going to make my Threadcake, but then I decided to make Harry Potter cupcakes instead since I'm going to a HP6 party tonight.

I'm kinda proud of them, especially since they were so last minute:

Harry Potter cupcake

The Dark Mark cupcake

Yay! HP6 cupcakes!

They're vanilla cupcakes with a chocolate frosting surprise center and a chocolate ganache topping.

Yay! :D

Huzzah! I'm glad you all like them :)

They're not as nice looking as my Watchmen cupcakes...but this is also the first time I've ever worked with candy melts - piping out that Dark Mark was a pain in the butt.

they look delicious! did you add food coloring to white chocolate for the snake? i am in envy of your cupcake design skillz.

Thanks guys! Cupcakes for everyone :-)

And yeah, Chells. If I had planned this better I would have bought dark green candy melts for the snake, but I only have white chocolate on hand so I dyed it. But, if you dye white chocolate you have to use either a gel or powder based coloring, not the traditional water based one everyone uses for their icing.
Water+chocolate = unhappy cupcakes.

Oh man, it was fun times last night and my cupcakes were a big hit.
But, the movie itself wasn't that good. I mean, it was entertaining and I don't hate it nor do I feel like it was a waste of time, I just feel like it could have been so much better.
Granted, there was not much action in Book 6 until the end, but they really could have done without all the comedy and love crap and focused more on the developments between Harry/Dumbeldore, Harry/Ginny, Harry/Snape and the process of finding out all about Voldemort's past.
There was hardly any mention at all of The Half-Blood Prince; the question was posed a few times of who it might be, but the mystery wasn't the same as it was in the book. It's the title of the book/movie, so they should have been that at least.
And the climax was pretty lame, it was going well until the last 15 minutes where it just sort of...ended.
Where was the funeral?
And most importantly where in the hell was that first Hogwarts battle?!

Pretty much my thoughts exactly, Khol. I was entertained but meh.

Also, they took out the end fight scene because of all the action/fighting in the next two movies.

And they took out the funeral because it apparently would have been too costly to have hundreds of actors for a few seconds in a scene with no dialogue, not to mention the CG necessary for all the creatures that show up.

Something like that.

The thing I'm liking about the midnight screenings is the sense of community because you end up talking to the people you're in line with and it's kind of interesting.

Except when you sit next to two girls infatuated with horoscopes and signs and are looking up all the famous Capricorns on wikipedia.

ooOOoo yummy and cool looking

Khol on Jul 15 '09 at 2:41pm
Oh, that all makes sense I guess, Alvin. But even if they didn't include the battle and the funeral they really should have focused more on the darker aspects of the book and less on love potions and the like. It felt more like a comedy and less like a set up for the next two movies.
They better not mess up the next two.
Although, I gotta give it to the director of cinematography, it was a beautifully made movie. Especially in the ways in which they showcased Hogwarts.
I wanna go to Hogwarts.

And yeah, that's what I like about midnight screenings as well - the fact that everyone came out for the same thing and we're all excited and pumped about it together. It's nice when the entire theater gets the subtle jokes because they're all big fans.
Chipmnk
Chipmnk on Jul 15 '09 at 2:56pm
Yeah, it was a little sillier/lighter-hearted than I would have expected or wanted, but maybe that just means the next movies will have that darker milieu.

And yes, there were some fricken beautiful shots.

Khol
Khol on Jul 15 '09 at 3:46pm
I have so much leftover ganache and I have no idea what to do with it.
I shall build you a village, bygrinstow.

Oh man, and remember that one scene when Ginny bent down to tie Harry's shoelace, Alvin? Wasn't that a majorly awkward and wtf moment? Why would she tie his shoe for him?
And then when she was bent on her knees and Harry was standing the entire theater was silent because it so terribly looked like she was kneeling for...ah...something else...and then this one guy loudly said "Oh my God" and we all laughed.
But really? Did they not realize what it looked like when they shot that scene?
Chipmnk
Chipmnk on Jul 15 '09 at 3:52pm
Hahaha, yes! That was a really strange interaction. They really couldn't have found some other thing for Ginny to have done that didn't involve kneeling down?

I wish they had that technology too, it would make getting to places so much easier and not involve me driving like an old lady.
