I have been trying to find the perfect idea for my first tattoo, and I think I might want one that has an art historical reference. How do you think any of these would translate into a tattoo?

The Venus of Willendorf here

the theme of Judith and Holofernes here

I also love comtemporary earth art, and Bernini, and old maps. Oh, and sailor tattoos...

Discuss.

I just don't really see the two you referenced working out as good looking tattoos...

Don't get sailor tattoos unless you're a sailor. Otherwise it looks lame and trendy.

For the pics you posted, I think the first one has the most shot of being a good tattoo, but do you really want that symbol in particular on your body? If so, then go for it. :) The 2nd one is too complicated, and a good tattoo artist would never put that on your skin because he/she would know that it would be a huge, undescript blob in 10 years.

My boyfriend has this M.C. Escher bug-creature succession on this back and it looks pretty awesome:

i'm not sure if the second one would work. you should go talk to some artists.

I love sailor tats. On sailors. Everyone else ends up looking like a poser, sorry.

My husband is a sailor, so it bugs the hell out of me when I see girls or kids getting tattoos of tradional things like "shellbacked," "dolphins," "golden dragons," etc that sailors need to earn.

The sailor tattoos don't mean anything to the kids other than that they picked it out of a book, which is lame to me. For other tattoos that perfectly fine, but for military ones, each tattoo has a significance to them, so it's like they are pretending they accomplished a feat even though they have never even come close to it.

Go for future art history. I recommend covering your entire back with a bananaphone work. Seriously.

my "sailor" tattoo is a tribute to my Grandad...who was a sailor. I didn't pick it out of a book...I took it from his uniform
