I have a work-related question and you guys can answer this better than just about anyone else I know.

I need to do some image editing at work. Nothing major - basically adding text to an image, cropping, etc. At home, I'd use Photoshop - but I don't have that here.

Are there good, FREE alternatives out there? I'm looking for something that's legal for me to use at work.

BIG THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!

Sorry, the NO was to MS Pain.

Thanks jillustration! I was considering Gimp, I remember people mentioning it before but that was ages ago... so I wasn't sure if it was still the way to go. :-)

It's pretty good for basic stuff, way better than MS Paint! Glad I could help.

GIMP is a fantastic program once you learn how to use it

if you're using windows, you can also try Paint.net, which i've heard good things about

lol... yeah, I was having trouble figuring out how to access the different layers, until I realized that there was a window for that - it was on my other monitor for some reason. Oops!

But most of it is intuitive for someone who's been using Photoshop.

I actually use Microsoft Word for a lot of basic image stuff. you can insert images, format them to be outside of text (so you can drag and reposition), add text boxes, rotate, align, and flip images, crop, enlarge, etc. It also scales high res images pretty nicely. I use the office 2003 version; i havent found all hte equivalent features on newer versions.

Algi - I'll look into it. Thanks!!

Bio-bot - believe it or not, I don't actually have Office. I think I can ask for it, I'm not sure how the licensing works for those things - for now I'm using Open Office.

I think there's a Powerpoint equivalent in Open Office, and the features are basically the same as in the MS Office. So you should be able to crop, add text, adjust brightness, contrast, rotate, etc. Then when you're done, just select everything you want included with the picture (like text) and hit 'save as picture'.

Ooh, I definitely should explore that - thanks for the tip!

the only drawback i found so far in open office is that Impress (powerpoint equivalent) won't let me embed movies, has anybody here ever done that?

slightly offtopic, but your question was answered with gimp i guess :)

Yo, Ladykat wassssup!? you'd be in a musical movie that takes place in dystopian America, the communists have won, so now everyone always has to walk around in gray jumpsuits. But not you, you want to introduce color to the world, that's why this movie is called "Rainbowstime", your name is Reign Boh, half vietnamese, half black, half West Virginian, half vegetarian, so basically you're like the most beautiful and exotic combination of races. You discover a delicious and beautiful watermelon growing in the basement of your house, and you've never seen color like this before, and it amazes you, so you use the watermelon's water colors to paint a picture of some shit, and then you show it to your grandpa who's cool as shit, unlike your folks who are all retarded and strict, and then he tells you the glory of color, so you go on a journey to find color, abandoning your parents and your simple life as a pencil sharpener. Eventually you form a militia of color that defeats the commie armies of evil with the power of friendship and goodness and lasers.

That's right!
