I actually prefer the Dark Knight Returns to Watchmen (they actually cover some similar themes, and are in the same time period)...I really enjoyed watchment, its a classic of course, but The Dark Knight Returns just connected with my sensibilities a bit more.

Marvel 1602 is a lot of fun with some amazing art, though its not an incredible story overall.

also, I recommend getting all the Fables trades up to issue 50 (volumes 1-8 I think)...its an incredibly satisfying journey. Its one over-arching story with some imaginative subplots along the way. Best storytelling in modern comics.

Highly, highly recommend Blankets. It's one of my favorite novels, graphic or otherwise, ever. And to a lesser extent Good-bye, Chunky Rice.

12 Reasons Why I Love Her by Jamie S. Rich is a sweet romp through an interesting romance, through both the good and bad.

I also enjoyed Tricked by Alex Robinson, which is like Crash in that it has several separate plotlines that come together.

Spiralbound by Aaron Renier is a nice read too. It's a bit on the childish side but there is a certain carefree, just-out-of-school-for-the-summer feel to it.

Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan is a pretty desolate, semi-political look at the whole Middle-Eastern conflict that I am already confused by.

We3 is a must. And if you do not shed a tear while reading it, you are not human.

As for the general capes-and-cowls, there are tons out there. The best collection of Batman graphic novels: Batman: Year One, The Killing Joke, Hush, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Dark Knight Returns.

And then for less of a Dark Knight focus, check out Kingdom Come, The New Frontier, Superman for All Seasons.

There are others if I can remember them...

Andi Watson's Little Star is enjoyable; however, it might not be entirely relatable on the surface level as it is mainly about parenting but it also has a whole other aspect about family and the balance between work and loved ones.
