I think this contest will easily have the most submissions, considering it has the best prize of all time

but maybe not, its also a tough one
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 7:50am
i said i would attempt to tally scores because i figured this contest might draw more submissions and could get out of control.
stickymike

haha good luck then!

I always enjoy reading these things

spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 8:01am
i wonder how many people will have read the entire description of the contest before submitting. or if some people will just read the theme and continue to sub some type of pun or cliche.
stingerstyler
   stingerstyler on Jun 19 '06 at 8:02am
awesome - I think they added that! Wasn't the theme create your own brand earlier? Anyway, this is even hotter than that! Awesome!
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 8:04am
i'm pretty sure it was always trend, not brand. could be wrong though.
staffell
staffell on Jun 19 '06 at 8:07am

So far I haven't been realy impressed with the submissions. A lot of them are just the same basic cliche crap on;y sumbitted to this contest rather than the general contest. I can't think of more than a handful of designs that I can recall from rating that left much of an impression on me.

Am I the only one feeling like this?
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 9:08am
well the theme is a bit more difficult than Extra Tasty for example.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 10:28am
wow, 107 submissions already in only a week...it took almost three weeks before there were this many for blik
bananaphone
   bananaphone on Jun 19 '06 at 11:21am
"but maybe not, its also a tough one"

Yes but so many people are willing to fail at it, they are just using it like a normal competition right now because none of the rules are enforced.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 11:33am
"they are just using it like a normal competition right now because none of the rules are enforced"

might explain why there are already 100+ subs.
Ste7en
   Ste7en on Jun 19 '06 at 11:37am
I always get my first subs in early for loves threadless. This time I waited a week. Ive got one more im working on thats probably my most unique sub, buts its also really hard.
stingerstyler
   stingerstyler on Jun 19 '06 at 11:39am
dude, already 107 designs? this is going blast!

start the list right away, even is the scores a shit so that we can see them get knocked off the list! :)
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 11:46am
i'll probably start the list some time shortly after the first subs have officially completed scoring. so tuesday or wednesday.

I'm really curious to see which subs will make the top at the end...

... and if the voters will keep in mind the competiton's theme when scoring.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 19 '06 at 8:21pm
hm, so all the day's submissions were for threadless loves. all 46 of em. none for the regular running.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 21 '06 at 5:03pm
update: i posted the top three scores so far. the first two should remain in the top 20, if the final scores of this competition resemble anything close to those from blik, red cross, or extra tasty.

more stats and an expanded list will follow as the competition rolls on.

this blog will likely be updated on a daily basis, but only bumped for significant changes
Ste7en
   Ste7en on Jun 21 '06 at 5:25pm
I think the top 20 will start at 2.7, when all are finished scoring

Ste7en

I think they are holding back all the other subs until after, thats what it sounds like in their guidelines...something along the lines of "after its over we will accept anything again" not an exact quote
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 21 '06 at 5:36pm
top 20 for the last three comps started at 2.50, but yeah i wouldn't be surprised if it were higher for this one. we at least know there will be a ton more entries (161 after a week is kinda nuts).

everyone has a chance. i still wouldn't be surprised if the blik winner doesn't come from the top 20 list.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 21 '06 at 5:40pm
ste7en, i'm still seeing subs come in for the regular running; just not as many as for loves threadless obviously.

i think the line you're refering to was meant to suggest they won't discourange you from submitting the typical cliched designs once this comp has finished.
pencilbomb
pencilbomb on Jun 21 '06 at 5:41pm
i'd like to know how many subs in this contest contain one of the elements that threadless called cliché
They Call Me Special K
They Call Me Special K on Jun 21 '06 at 5:45pm
oh man, that is surprisingly encouraging. i wouldve thought id have no chance of making the list for this contest, but 2.4? are you serious? that sounds doable.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 21 '06 at 5:47pm
pencilbomb, yeah i thought of keeping track of that, like i did with the hearts, handholding, and globes for red cross, but i figured with all the subs it would get out of control. would just annoy me really. and also, in the end i don't think the number of cliched submissions that break threadless' suggested guidelines will be as interesting or significant from a percentage of total subs standpoint.

there have been a few hearts and skulls already, but fortunately not as many as there could be.
They Call Me Special K
They Call Me Special K on Jun 21 '06 at 5:49pm
there have been at least 2 or 3 subs that think its somehow creative to put each of the forbidden elements in the sub, and its just plain annoying.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 21 '06 at 5:52pm
yeah 2.4 is doable for now. but the competition is still very young. only 21 designs have actually finsihed scoring through seven days....like i said before though, if the final scoring of this comp is similar to others, then a 2.40 is pretty darn good....and we all know scores are merely a guide to what gets printed, not the final say.

as much as people want to kiss up to established artists, tom burns sub isn't anything you couldn't see every month of the normal competition. The whole flowers forming faces thing is so overdone, hey, his version is good, its technically very strong, but it sure as hell ain't unique.
spencekarl
spencekarl on Jun 21 '06 at 6:57pm
i don't see anything wrong with praising the quality of tom's design. it was executed quite well in my opinion. whether it's unique enough to win the competition isn't up to me, which is why i never claimed it was worthy of taking home the prize.

the phrase kissing up to established artists seems to suggest that people here are dishing praise simply due to the name behind the design. i'll agree, this does happen with some artists (perhaps this why ross submits under a few different names), but i don't see it happening in this blog. not sure if you were refering to someone specific or just posting as a general comment.

I think the top 20 list of this comp will have quite a high entry level - maybe even close to 3.0 - i'm thinking there will be a LOT of subs...
