Threadless

spencekarl is a 34.16 year old boy, has been a member since March 2, 2006, has scored 11,210 submissions, giving an average score of 1.37, helping 148 designs get printed.
complaint and discussion sprouts up occasionally (in the blog forum) about trends in scoring results. usually in regards to the high scores some of the more clichéd submissions receive. but really, injustice cries are heard from all sides.

i'd like to look at the scoring of jublin's no peeking for a moment. Threadless.com Submission - no peekingits final score was an impressive 3.78, earning it a spot in the top five all-time for scored submissions and a recent print. now obviously voting is a subjective process; what one person perceives as a 4, another person might interpret as a 2. however, does a logical argument exist to score this particular design a 0? you might hate cartoon monsters. might be disgusted by the thought of a child being eaten. or maybe you just despise the game of hide and seek. but regardless of such opinions, doesn't the artwork alone at least deserve a 1?

[the following information is factual. it was found on a secret threadless page that i recently stumbled upon. the page is now password protected.]

if you were to remove all the votes of people who scored no peeking a 0, and then recalculated the average without those votes, jublin's design would have scored a 4.05! what does that mean in regards to the total number of 0's it received? well considering that 2955 people voted, and doing a bit of math, we learn that a whopping 196 people gave no peeking a 0!

now just for my curiosity, i'll ask the question again: does a logical argument exist to score this design a 0?

note: i'm only posting this information since no peeking has now been printed. and since the page has now been protected.

the only time a give a 0 is if the artwork is terrible and looks like absolutely no effort was put into the work at all.

huh? shirtflirt, you're not making sense to me...i posted this to hear someone's explaination for why they voted this design a ZERO. there were 196 people who voted it a zero, so i would like to hear a logical explaination...sorry if i wasn't clear on that. i thought i was pretty clear.

inayellowsub

everyone has their own reasoning behind giving a shirt a particular score. that's up to the descretion of the scorer, and you can't change what they think of the design. it's a matter of taste and opinion.
melhel86
melhel86 on May 10 '06 at 2:21pm
If anyone can find a reason to give that design a zero then I'm being way to nice in scoring and need to go change some votes. I always score for the art, if I don't particularly like it but it showed merit and I could see others wearing it I at least give it a 3. I reserve 4's and 5's for shirts that I would like to see printed even if I wouldn't particulary buy it. I give mostly 2's and 3's the 1's when it's not good but the person tried and 0's if the content is uncalled for (multiple nippleesque subs) and if it's just crap.
suspiria
suspiria on May 10 '06 at 2:22pm
quite simply, a lot of people only vote 0 or 5 and don't utilize 1-4 at all. if they don't like a design even a little? zero. if a design is artitically great but they would not personally wear it? zero. tons of people do this which is why 3+ is considered great.

there are also a few dicks who just press 0 on everything. just to be a dick.
rrich76
rrich76 on May 10 '06 at 2:23pm
I think even something that sucks deserves a 1. Zeros (for me anyway) are reserved for submissions that are either extremely offensive, blatantly stolen, or obviously took no effort at all, like just text or some crappy 5 second scribble. People are jerks though. They're going to keep on lowballing good work.
inayellowsub
inayellowsub on May 10 '06 at 2:24pm
i agree with rich.
suspiria
suspiria on May 10 '06 at 2:24pm
they do it because theoretically it would decrease the chances of shirts they don't like being printed, which would increase the chances of shirts they do like being printed, but it really doesn't work out that way because so many people vote with a 0/5 dichotomy the only effect is to pull the average score towards 2.5

but as you see removing all the zeros only raises the score by .27

so all those zeros probably dont matter, at least in this case,

cause this design has a good general appeal for most demographics...

other designs might be effected alot worse by all those zeros...becaues frankly i think that 75 % or more of the voters only score on personal preference alone, and shirt color could be the biggest reason they give a zero...i dont like green - "0".. and such , or not understanding the design within 2 seconds, automatic "0"...
spencekarl
spencekarl on May 10 '06 at 2:25pm
ok, i must be missing something here...help me out if something was worded wrong or was too confusing.

of course i understand everyone is entitled to their opinion. and of course everyone is entitled to their own system of scoring. but i'm was just curious to hear the reasoning behind a zero for this design. i'm not attempting to change someone's opinion of force mine on someone else. i'm JUST curious (that's why i used the word curiosity).

spence i love you man. you are the research master! you are my go to source for all the info on threadless man. you only vote this sub zero if:

A) you're blind

B) you're blind

C) you're blind

D) all of the above

E) you have a vendetta against jublin

those 196 zeros were probably people who barely come to the site at all, let alone blog much. I seriously doubt if the culprits are reading this and refuse to come forward, they're more than likely not even frequent buyers.

honestly if i hate a sub, but i can tell they took the time as far as illustration goes, and didn't just throw something together, then i give it a 1. zeroes go for just plain stupid stuff, or anything that makes fun of Jesus. period.

When I first started scoring (I've scored quite a few subs) I only gave out 5's & 0's. (5 if I would wear it 0 if not)

It wasn't until I starting submitting stuff that I realized I should give in between scores to reward/encourage people for decent attempts, good illustration, good concept, etc.

So that's what I think happens in cases like that. People want to lessen the chances of a subthey don't want to be printed.

i'm sure threadless throws out some of the low scores. they obviously don't base what they print on the score. honestly i think it has more weight on 'i'd buy it' than anything. money talks.

I didn't like this submission because i felt it was prejudiced against native swamp land. I also didn't like the stereotyping of tree monsters as child molestors.

of course a logical argument exsists to zero this. people may really hate the style and want to make sure it wont get printed above other shirts. Which is totally fair, in my mind.

I'd never wear this, but I like Jublin, think he's really talented (duh) and can appreciate the skill gone into the illustration, so I 4'd it. It's just my policy of voting, but I have nothing against those who chose to 0 this or any other sub.
suspiria
suspiria on May 10 '06 at 2:37pm
a lot of people may not have liked the shirt just because it wasnt their style, there are lots of people on here who exclusively like "funny" shirts, or "pretty" shirts, or "design-y" shirts, and won't give a second glance to anything else. obviously there is no way to justify giving this a 0 based on merit or talent or attractiveness or whatever, because that implies that there is really nothing worse, and i don't think anyone can say that truthfully

I give low scores if I think the artwork is bad for sure, but also if I think the design is just not suited/badly suited for a t-shirt. I mean I think some art is really well done, but it looks bad on a shirt IMO.

jublin
   jublin on May 10 '06 at 2:52pm
well thanks for sharing this spencekarl. this is definitely some insider info that (ovbiously) is of great interest to me.

Only 200? I should count my blessings. Honestly I think tesco hit the nail on the head. I looked at all the zeros I have given out and there are quite a few. Most of them are subs that look like someone spent a total of 4 seconds throwing together, but I also have been giving out low scores to shirts like this http://www.threadless.com/submission/74621/M_Peach_Bush

I guess I'm just trying to protect the site from coming a place to make political statements. That's a pretty shirt already, but you get the idea.

I also imagine that there are a lot of people (2 hundred or so in this case) that don't enjoy the cartoony styles and designs and want to make sure threadless doesn't print these kind of designs. Everybody probably wants threadless to be something they're not. Right?

I gave it a zero.

Jublin will NEVER trick me into giving him a five.

Little do you people know....but Jublin draws secret patterns in his work that hypnotize you and make you push the 5 button.

I see through it. I'm onto you.....

it is funny that his sub got a .69 when it was nipple related.
