They were all "synth" bands in the '80s. Even metal had some synth in it.

"The Miami Vice Theme" might as well be the theme of the entire decade.

Human League
New Order
Depeche Mode

(I would consider some of the Cure to be synth pop, but I don't think of them as synth pop by and large, so I can't put them on there)

Book of Love
Tears for Fears (are they a synth band? If not, then Erasure)

I think a better survey would be TOP THREE SYNTH POP/NEW WAVE SONGS OF THE 80s, because there are some fabulous one hit wonders.

Gary Numan, Devo (not strictly synth but close enough), Wall of Voodoo or The Nails (Both one hit wonders)

Yeah, I'm not sure what can be truly categorized as "synth-pop" because the distinction didn't really exist at the time. You could put a lot of bands in there. The Eurythmics, for example.

The one-hit-wonders are probably what define "synth-pop" today, or at least the one hits of bands that had other hits, but those are the ones still remembered today. Kajagoogoo, Soft Cell, The Buggles, etc.

I think it would be more interesting to talk about bands that didn't have synth in them in the '80s.

I can't categorize Joy Division as synth pop because they're not really... poppy

Duh, OMD was right there at the top. (I know, I said I was fleeing).

But speaking of bad high school dance memories, The The were DEFINITELY not synth-pop, as evidenced by the otherwise empty dance floor when my friends and I finally succeeded in coaxing the DJ to play "Infected".

And Matt Johnson uses whatever instruments it takes to get the job done.

Orchestral Manuveors in the Dark wrote a song about my town in NC. Unfortunately the song is about a KKK and Communist worker shootout/massacre/police un-intervention/chaos that happened in I believe 1977
