That seems weird that it was just taken down. Its been 4+ years since it was first subbed, seems like it would have been discovered and taken down long ago if there was a copyright issue with it.

It is true, the design has been taken down in response to a letter we received from LucasFilm. However, we are trying our best to work out some sort of arrangement where we can continue to produce it. We really hope to bring it back, as it is one of the all time greats. Stay tuned.

Dang, I only have a fruit of the loom copy of the tee, I was hoping to buy a more comfytown Threadless version one of these days!

Man, talk about a delayed response to a situation. Did Lucas finally lose enough of his Jabba-like chin weight to look out beyond it to the computer screen?

i'm glad I also bought this one as well while it still exists for selling:

that does suck indeed. The dude has to be like a billionaire so he doesn't need whatever money these shirts make which is probably pretty miniscule compared to whatever official merchandise sales bring in. Anyone who's making a shirt like those is doing it out of love for his work, its like a tribute. Seems kind of douchey, like he's poopin on his fans

from now on if you want to do a star wars reference shirt just draw a big mustache on the character and maybe give the character a hook for a hand to distance yourself from the source material

you would think LucasFilms would be familiar with the concept of parody considering they made Episodes I, II, and III.

As someone who comes to Threadless for amazing art and original concepts, I expect I'm the only one to hold this belief, but I think perhaps having the Star Wars crutch eliminated could actually be for the better.

it's incredibly lame that it took this long to take out what has become a classic design from one of Threadless' most iconic designers, yes. That's undeniable. But I feel like this should translate more to "how can I make this a really strong parody instead of just a pop-culture reference", or even better, "how can I make an awesome design WITHOUT a pop culture reference", instead of a "omg how dare the creator of these characters want a say in how they're used." I'm sure Threadless would be just as upset if someone made a movie about the League of Cliche Supervillains, or a cartoon series about Mr. Brown, or a graphic novel called "The Communist Party". But then, if it's OK to use Lucas' characters for profit, why isn't it OK for others to use ours?

I'm sure I'm in the vast minority, but I think that these sorts of things should inspire designers to push their own creativity even further. It's a rough break, but it's not like Lucas hasn't been known for being heavy handed with the lawsuits. Every single designer who could be effected by something like this has more to offer than Star Wars shirts, right? It should be easy to bounce back
brethart2006
brethart2006 on Jun 01 '09 at 3:44pm
I disagree. The shirts that reference pop culture are just as clever and creative as those that don't. There's enough room on the site for both the artsy type and the ones that reference film and tv.

But this is ridiculous that they had to take it down as it was clearly poking fun and not infringing on Star Wars' properties.

Plus, it's been out for years and years.

I hear what you're saying Adder XYU,I do get kinda bored with all the super mario and star wars reference designs that roll through but the ones that do make it to print are generally good. And it's a fair point that people should be paid for their creations, even old George I guess. It's just kinda irksome though because it's like all of sudden they're deciding to speak up when it's been around for a while now. I guess they didn't know about if before.

I think a good pop culture reference done in a sly and subtle way are just as good as an original concept, I don't think it's a crutch if it's done creatively and visually arresting, it's hard squeezing out something original from an established pop culture piece already formed in everyone's mind and its preconditions. I think there's room for both on this site and I don't really see people leaning on pop culture here any more than original concepts.
AdderXYU
AdderXYU on Jun 01 '09 at 5:42pm
I guess I'll just never understand how there are only two genres: shirts that reference popular things, and shirts that are artsy.

Where does "Adorable Disaster" or "Not Safe for Work" or "Now That's Dope" fit in? Or "Such a Great Height" or "peace and love: can you tell the difference" or "playground joust" or "homework evidence" or etc etc... they're all good shirts, but they neither fit into "pop culture" nor do they fit in as "artsy".

It's not to say I can't appreciate pop culture (I've created some myself, and This Is Not a Pipe in my cart proves that I'm not above wearing an intelligent parody). I just feel like it's often used as a crutch, as opposed to a foundation. I feel like the line of parody and fair use is getting increasingly blurry. And I feel as though one should save a pop-culture idea for when they feel they're doing something unique with it. too often there seems to be a "well, this is popular, let's make a design with this" vibe to that sort of work, as opposed to "this is a great idea that requires this reference to work". There is room for pop culture, yes. The question, to me, is how much room do we give it, and how much equally humorous or shirtworthy work do we push out for the sake of a movie reference?

That doesn't change the fact that it took a damn long time for Lucas to get his panties bunched about it, which does make the whole thing seem quite unfair. Dark Side of the Garden was inspired, I'm not about to take that away from it. I think the reason Glennz was so successful here was that he knew how to take a familiar concept and turn it into something simple yet artful, with an unexpected but amusing and intelligent twist. But all parody is playing-with-fire territory. All I'm suggesting is that instead of letting anger boil over, it could be more beneficial to lead people to step back and reconsider their concept strength and execution before going full throttle into a parody that might not be parodic enough, or to start searching for more inspiration outside of popular culture. Not to eliminate such ideas forever, but to weigh the decision to use a copyrighted character before going in and doing so.
