Hellooooooooo my lovelies!

I'm in the midst of planning a European Tour of Epic Proportions for my brother and I, and we are concentrating most of our time in Italy...

I've already got us booked and going to Venice and the Cinque Terre (staying in Riomaggiore) but would love any other suggestions you have of favourite places!

Most specifically places to stop and gawp at/stay in as we may our way down from Cinque Terre through Florence and on to Rome and eventually Naples...

Someone recommeded Castiglion Fiorentino which looks AMAZING...

If you've been anywhere you'd love or would recommend, I'd love to hear about it?!

THANKS PEOPLE!!!

All I know of Italy is from Naples southwards, and it was great!
Be sure to take the Naples underground tour, what lays beneath this city is just awesome (I can't recommend it personally since it was not available for the public when I visited a while ago, but what I did visit in special tours was unbelievable, and a friend recently did the tour and loved it).

Also volcanoes!

Yay! Castiglion Fiorentino, please take some pics if you go there. It was on the train line that runs from Rome to Florence I think. Have a lovely time.

angelito on Jun 02 '11 at 7:12am
Yup Vatican is definitely on the to-do list. When I went there many moons ago I think I cried when I saw the Pieta. My bro hasn't been so we will be visiting all the staples whilst we are travelling!

Castiglion Fiorenetino looks so gorgeous, that might have to be the place we splurge and stay somewhere nice for a few nights...

I've also been recommended San Gimignano by an Italian friend of mine, which looks amazing...

I know, I'm really grateful... I also make sure that it's a top priority for me though, so I live pretty simply/buy cheap clothes etc so I can spend money on travels and adventures - much prefer it that way :) :)

Cinque Terre is nice, it takes only 5-6 hours walks along the side sea (5 towns). Very nice. Genova is nice too. Portofino is a must too, (they said so). Just a small town for rich people (Dubai wanted to copy the whole town in their place). Here are some of my photoes ;D

angelito on Jun 02 '11 at 7:29am
Oh god that looks gorgeous! I'm not sure if we'll be able to go further south than Naples/Pompeii, as I've promised him we'll finish the trip with a few days on the beach in Sardinia.... 2 weeks is just not enough time to see Italy! :/

from Panorama I'll go to Isola d'Elba again this year. It takes years to see real Italy ;D

Are you driving there? Or by train?
SJ27

Go to Monte Cassino between Rome and Naples if you like war graves (who doesn't?!) but it was a big battle for NZ (and especially Poland) in World War II. There's an Abbey and stuff if war history's not your thing. It all got rebuilt after WWII.

Also I really like the whole Veneto region around Venice. Towns like Verona and Padua you can do on the way to/from Milan/Como or turn south around Vicenza to go to Florence/Pisa and ultimately Rome via Bologna.
angelito
angelito on Jun 02 '11 at 7:49am
Ricco - yes!! Maybe we could meet up for dinner one of the nights we are in 5 Terre?

Esta - we are flying into Venice, then will either train/drive over to 5 Terre... we really want to get a car for quite a bit of it, especially for driving through Tuscany. Embarrasingly, neither of us can drive a manual though and automatics seem to cost a lot more to hire! So we've yet to figure that bit out...

Awesome thanks SJ! It would be great to pay our respects at the battleground, but as this is a much-needed break in a pretty shit year for both of us, I think we will be trying to stick to beautiful places/lots of beer.... He he he!
angelito
angelito on Jun 02 '11 at 7:49am
Oh duh - we are in 5 Terre on the 11th and 12th of July :)
gumbolimbo
   gumbolimbo on Jun 02 '11 at 7:58am
Not sure how confident you are as drivers, because the traffic can be quite maniac in Italy! Everyone thinks the rules are there to be broken :D
But if you avoid the busiest motorways (the one from milano to firenze was kinda intense I remember) you should be fine.

Train seems quite doable unless you want to go to the villages. Even through the cinqueterre is a train line.

i've only seen venice, florence, cinque terre, and lake como. all awesome, but venice and lake como were my favourites.
angelito
angelito on Jun 02 '11 at 8:06am
hehe - I have extracted a promise from my bro that if we get a car he has to do the big-city driving. I will drive through the countryside. Preferably countryside with sunflowers.. ;)

The more I look into cars though the more pricey it looks - we might be training more than we thought we would!

angelito
angelito on Jun 02 '11 at 8:08am
I don't think we are going to be able to make it to Lake Como :( Gutted.

It's such a short time to see so many places, I'm trying to make sure we get at least 2 days in each place before moving on, and the bigger places will need more time. I guess that's a good reason to have to go back at some point though, right?

If it were up to me I would kind of happily ditch Rome and Naples as I have been there and would kind of prefer a more chilled-out, less city-y trip, but I know he really wants to go there, so we shall!

:)

For Cheap/Free Roam & Board
Check

AirBnb is a site that lets people sublet rooms or entire apartments by the night/week
Sometimes it takes some searching but when I used in Prague and Budapest I got an entire apartment (bathroom, kitchen, washer/dryer, private bedroom) for $30-40 a night. Its awesome
Air BnB

These two sites, if you are feeling extra adventurous allow you to do work for free lodging. Might be cool to do just for a weekend or a few days, just found out about it recently and wanna really give it a shot sometime.

Brazil is going gooooood. We're in the crunch time right now. Doing my independent study, got more more week, then a week to write my 40 page research write-up.
Guhhhhhh

I'll post some more soon! I haven't taken any in a minute, this city is too dangerous to carry my camera around, so I only take pictures really when we take trips and stuff. I'll for sure get some more when I go to Argentina after the programs over.

James - Yay! When? Next week? Yes?

Alwin - I'm sure he'd be totally up for that. He's six foot something and a lotta muscle - you're down with that, right?

Ah, I went to Italy last April. First of all it's awesome, if you have never gone, you're going to have such a ridiculously ridiculous time. So being a future Classics major, getting to see places like Pompeii are so incredible. Also getting to see the Roman Forum is so impressive as well. Literally, go to as many museums as you can, and take pictures of everything.

Hiya! I'm really lucky in that I have been there before - the last time I went to the "mainland" though I was 16, and that was a long time ago! I completely fell in love with it then, and I'm so excited to be going back and sharing it with my bro... There will be millions of photos!! Have bought extra massive memory cards in preparation ;)
