I can vouch for the Vanessa Dress. I bought one just around christmas and, not only did it fit extremely well, I received quite a few comliments at my post-christmas work party. It's extremely well made, surprisingly so actually. The fabric is only slightly stretchy, the perfect amount, and a good, medium, to light-medium weight.

My waist isn't quite as small, in relation to my hips and chest, as most of the model's used on sites for this dress but, it wasn't too bad anyway.

Well, it's a dressy evening. So nothing too short/low cut/tight I think. But nothing too casual. Last year I wore this (please excuse stupid facial expression)

and I think it was kind of suitable. If a bit short. And I wouldn't do strapless again because I felt like I was going to constantly fall out of it.

So... something dressy-ish like that?

French Connection and Warehouse usually have nice dresses in. I haven't been near any shops for a while, on account of my utter brokeness, but I would venture out on a shopping trip for you, if you wanted?

Not sure if we'll be going. But I'm trying to think ahead just in case!

My requirements would be:

not a high neck - slightly lower or v neck works best
prob short not long
any colour, really
nothing that flares out a lot at the waist.
