My brother is probably coming to London to do a 2 week course at Cambridge, and will be taking a month off to travel around Europe - so we are going to go travelling around together!

He's never been to Europe before, so is wanting to do the usual France, Italy, Greece - and whatever else we can fit in.

So my question to you, my friends, is if you have any favourite places in Europe you have been? Anywhere different or out of the way? I'm really lucky in that I have been to quite a few places - so any suggestions of new or different places would be amazing!

So far I'm thinking:

Paris (don't want to. Bad memories, but he needs to see the Eiffel Tower!)
Athens
A greek island
Florence
Venice (a bit selfish - I've always wanted to go!)
Sardinia
Rome

Any ideas?

Wheeeeeeeee!!!!

I'm regretting giving away my Lonely Planet Europe book now.

Stockholm is my favourite place ever.

There's green areas, huge lakes, nice architecture and beautiful, friendly people wherever you look.

It's a bit on the expensive side though.

Venice is my 2nd favourite place so good that's on your list.
Bramish

And obviously you should visit me in Vienna. Free accommodation here.

I was going to say Greek Islands, but I see you have that covered :)

I love France - any and all bits of it.
I stiiiillll haven't been to Barcelona, so I would put that on my personal list.

I wouldn't try to do too much - I guess you might want to do some parts of the UK too? Edinburgh is lovely.

BARCELOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONA

Seriously, best place ever.
angelito
angelito on Mar 11 '11 at 5:39am
Oh yes! Edinburgh definitely

Our grandfather is from Scotland and neither of us have been, so that's top of the list.

Also, it will be July, so it will be stinking hot (better than cold!)

Stockholm was cool Bram - I think he'd like it there. I'd kind of like to go to some places I haven't been to, as well as the classics, so I get to see some new stuff too! But I'm totally excited about covering the places he wants to see :)

My editor has a house on a greek island - that might be a goer! But I know it's quite a journey to get there, and I don't think we will have much time.

VIENNA Stu totally - I've never been and have always wanted to! Got room for 2 Kiwis?

EXCITEMENT!

I always though Barcelona is a bit overrated (expensive & overcrowded). It really depends on how intense you like your cities, I guess.
In Spain, I liked Valencia a lot. Lively, lots going on, but slightly off the tourist map and a bit more relaxed.

I agree with Barcelona... also:

ROME.

Are you going to take the whole month off or are you going to be doing this as weekend trips?

Also, I hope you are not applying that stinking hot comment to Scotland ;)

I went to a little place called castiglion fiorentino in tuscany.
It had to be the most beautiful place I've ever been in my life. I saw nature that I've only seen in books. I'd love to go back there…

Oh and I loved Amsterdam when we went - wish we'd had a bit more time there :)

Hey abi, you can always do another round of Amsterdam. Tis a jump away from where you are and flights sometimes cost about a fiver these days :))
Bramish
   Bramish on Mar 11 '11 at 5:50am
You can definitely stay with us providing you don't mind sharing a double bed.

When are you planning on travelling?
angelito
angelito on Mar 11 '11 at 5:55am
Quick brown fox - that looks absolutely STUNNING! Perfect :) I want to show him parts of Europe that aren't necessarily hugely touristy...

Ha yes maybe Scotland will be the exception to the stinking hotness....

I love Spain, but I'm worried that 3 weeks won't be long enough to do all the places he wants to cover - so might have to leave it out this time :(

I can't wait to see him.
mullmuggins
mullmuggins on Mar 11 '11 at 5:55am
I'm totally up for a revisit - would like to see more than just Amsterdam too! On the subject, do you think you'll make it to the meet up?

And to stay a little bit on topic, we will be visiting friends in Madrid, hopefully at some point this year, which I hear is a lovely city, so that could go on the list too :)

angelito on Mar 11 '11 at 6:01am
Ah it is supposed to be, but I just don't know if we'll have time for Spain. If we did, Andalucia would be the place for us to go I think...

My brother and I were both major Art History and Classical studies geeks, and whilst I've been to the main places, he hasn't - so we will definitely cover the important ones!

Also want to give him a decent amount of relaxation and beaches and sunshine - he's had a rough time of it lately. So Sardinia and a Greek island should help that!

^ I'm still planning to go, but the friend living in London may not be able to host me. (Actually, I don't manage to get in touch with him at all. I think he's touring atm or something). So I'm looking for an alternative.
Did I remember correctly you may or may not have place to lay my head abi?

*sorry for topic derail*

Sardinia is ueber pretty. Some of the most beautiful beaches i've seen.

mullmuggins on Mar 11 '11 at 6:07am
It's tricky knowing how much to cover, isn't it! If you don't go for your bosses Greek Island advice, I can offer a few personal recommendations :)

Yes, Esta - we've got a spare room and you'd be more than welcome! :)

I briefly lived in Florence... it's gorgeous, not to mention the area around there.

Love Prague too. And Amsterdam is awesome. And Belgium. Always wanted to visit Scandinavia and Iceland too...

If you happen to drop by Austria or Munich, I have family and friends there who you could meet up with for a local's perspective. :-)

Oh, Greece is lovely too. I spent a month there during the Paralympics. Only ever been to one of the islands, Syros, which is off the beaten track (nobody speaks English there) but it is gorgeous. Well worth a visit.

Most places along the A10 between Monument and Hertford

Also, I am planning on visiting Germany this year, specifically Neuschwanstein castle. I've never been there, but I'm drawn to Bavaria and the Black Forest. It just looks beautiful. Of course, it might be a shit hole when I get there, but I doubt it.

Ahhh I know, Sardinia is one of my favourites - I think I've been 2 or 3 times now - so relaxing and just eye-poppingly beautiful! I can't wait to show him...

Oooh good ones, thanks Simon! Also, I'm emailing you this weekend :)

I love these suggestions, thank you people! Dan when you going, again? If it's before July lemme know what you thought!

Esta it would be awesome to see you at the meetup!

This is something awesome to look forward to. I'm excited.

You know, I always hear that Paris isn't as great as it's made out to be, but as a hopeless romantic, I feel some sort of obligation to go there.

And I'd really like to see Edinburgh. It's pretty much the epicenter for poetry and literature.
angelito
angelito on Mar 11 '11 at 11:40am
I'd always loved Paris. But after the last trip there, which was terrible and I had the cloud of knowing by (now ex) boyfriend was going to break up with me hanging over me the entire time - it's very much been tainted for me.

I hope to like it again someday.

Amsterdam is nice, Berlin very ok if you don't mind paying everything with cash as they're bit of credit card nazis, Barcelona is good apart from erm non-native hoodlums and albeit at a distance from you would be Stockholm on summer as very recommendable. Or Copenhagen (free tour at Carlsberg) a bit closer.
angelito
angelito on Mar 13 '11 at 2:44pm

I forget where I went in finland. Helsinki is nice, but some of the more countryside type places were nice. Talinn in Estonia was cool, but it was a long time ago, now.

I went to Lagos in the south of portugal, not much art or culcha but plenty of bars and lounging on the beach.
