just curious, i don't have a clear idea in mind for my next design just yet, so i've been kicking around the idea of reworking this design:

unfathomable - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

it didn't really make a big splash the last time around, but i'm quite fond of it. i was thinking of changing the hand-drawn linework to be more filled and crisp, swapping out the background entirely, and possibly adjusting the color palette to incorporat a 5th color.

any thoughts? i wan't able to get much feedback about why it fizzled last time, and since i seem to be experiencing a similar phenomenon with my current sub, i would love to get some input on where i've missed the mark.

kisses in advance!

I like it and it's worthy of a rework.

thanks! aside from what i mentioned upthread, is there anything you feel isn't working right now?

hmm, i dunno. i gave it a 3, so i obviously thought it had some potential. the images all together weird me out a little..if you choke a snake who just ate a bird while chanting a special spell it will shit diamonds for you? it isn't a bad design though and a lot of folks tend to like the abstractness. maybe play w/ colors and toss it in the critique section?

I think your re-work ideas are on target. I also think the original lacks pop or texture or something - I can't put my finger on it. I'm sure that's incredibly unhelpful. You might think this is gimmicky, but puffy paint on the hands would look nice.

I'd either drop the writing in the background or swap it for something else. I don't think the color needs to be changed no need for more colors IMO. Maybe alittle work on the hand, but don't lose the lose style of the design. I was thinking maybe a flat patteren on the snake.

yeah, i think i might spend some time on it and drop in into critique. as far as meaning goes, it was originally for the science of sleep so it was meant to be a little dreamlike. it's actually a bit crass: handjobs for diamond rings. a couple people seemed to think that the diamonds were coming out of the snake's butt instead of the ring, so maybe i need to work onthe positioning there.

rathergreen, i actually know exactly what you mean, but i don't know how to solve it. i'm not sure about puffy paint but i did actually want the lighter color to be metallic ink -- i didn't think that was realistic, though.

edword, a couple people disliked the background and i'm kind of mixed on it myself. i like the idea of having some subtle layer back there but what, i can't say for sure.

thanks everybody for taking the time to give your input! it is all greatly appreciated :)

Metallic ink - that was going to be my next suggestion. Even though I'd hate to see ink effects go into over-use, I don't think people take advantage of them enough when appropriate. Doing some, all, or just the outlines of the scales could look really cool. Another thought - can Threadless print inks in different opacities? A few transparent colors on heather gray would give you great added texture. Screw realism!

no transparent inks, unfortunately... but i'm with you, i like seeing different inks. i'd love to see that red gloss ink from this shirt used more... yum! i like the idea of outlining the scales, too.
