Anyone out there read any nerdy fantasy/sci fi/ weird fiction book and have any recommendations?

I've unfortunately fallen behind a bit on my reading so I could really use some new material.

Here's a list of my recommendations:

Sci Fi:
Douglas Adams - The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Iain M Banks - The Culture Novels
Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game

Fantasy:
J.R.R. Tolkein - The Lord of the Rings
Steven Erikson - The Malazan Book of the Fallen Series
Neil Gaiman - All of his novels/graphic novels
George R.R.Martin - Song of Ice and Fire Series

Weird Fiction:
China Mieville - All his novels

Oh no, not again.

So did you read Good Omens? I very much enjoyed that book. But I am even nerdier than you; I typically read non-fiction.

Another reason I brought this up is because I just got back from C2E2 and I had a chance to attend the China Mieville panel and he was really awesome. I'd highly recommend his books. Perdido Street Station is probably his most popular. I'd also recommend Un Lun Dun which is a young adult book but I think all ages would enjoy it.

I loved Good Omens, Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and I love the humor that's in all of Terry Pratchett's novels as well.

Terry Pratchett is fantastic. I'm also currently on a Christopher Moore kick, though his books aren't sci-fi/fantasy in the traditional sesnse.

I've also been keeping track of the books I've read since 1995. NERDS 4 LYFE!

Roger Zelazny - pretty much anything he's written but my favorites are:
Donnerjack
Lord Demon
Lord of Light

I'd classify them as fantasy with a touch of sci-fi although Donnerjack would be the most sci-fi

"An Abundance of Katherines" by John Green

Not sci-fi or fantasy, but plenty nerdy if you like math equations.
NERDFIGHTERS FTW!!!

I just came in here to say that if you ever do a Loves challenge that is about food, please offer the Modernist Cuisine 6 volume set a prize. That would be nerdtastic.

By Ursula Le Guin: "The Disposessed", "The Left Hand of Darkness", the classic Earthsea trilogy. Lots of other stuff too even though she's let herself fall into heavy-handed political correctness lately.

Doris Lessing: "The Marriages Between Zones 3, 4 and 5" (that title alone is worth worlds), "The Making of the Representative for Planet 8".

Austin Tappan Wright: "Islandia". Possibly my all-time fav book.

More later, maybe.

Also, I've not read any of their stuff but on Wikipedia it says that Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein (along with Clarke) were known as the "Big Three" of science fiction.

I've kept a book list for forever, too. :)

how about Madeleine L'Engle (Wrinkle in Time, etc.)?

that genre always bugged me. James Herbert and Hugo Cook's writing is like that, and it's like "if you have laserguns and spaceships why the fuck do you carry swords and ride dragons?"

well theres not really laser guns and spaceships.... it has ghosts and a castly and this virtual reality system. It sort of challenges the concept of what makes something real

Orson Scott Card will forever be the king of Sci-Fi

Philip K. Dick if you want a more psychological, less-SciFi novel, but with all the fun paradox, mindfucks, and craziness

Has anyone read the series "A Tale of Malazan Book of the Fallen" series by Steven Erikson? I just picked up the tenth and final book of the series and I'm really excited to get into it.

This is actually one of my favorite current fantasy series. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a really good Epic fantasy series.
