So, having heard a coule Ramones songs on the radio and around town, I finally got around to picking up a "best of" CD, and I must say, I'm diggin' it quite a bit. But I noticed something I thought was kinda odd- the handful of songs at the end of the CD sound different than the others. I'm not really up-n-up on music classification, so I know I'm gonna put this wrong, but they sound more... American? Kinda AC/DC Metallica-esque, I guess. So here are my questions:

Did the Ramones' sound change over the time that they were playing, or were tracks like these intermittent throughout their discography, and for some reason this CD clumped them together at the end?

If their sound did change, which albums would you reccomend I pick up if I prefer songs like "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "I Wanna Be Sedated" to "Garden of Serenity" and "I Believe in Miracles?"

What other punk bands would you reccomend that are similar or not-similar-but-also-good?

Ramones are my fave band.

they changed a little their sound, but not the song concept.

i suggest you all first 4 albums.

Ramones, Rocket To Russia, Leave Home and Road To Ruin.

a little difference in sound you can find on Pleasant Dreams, Subterranean Jungle and Mondo Bizzarro.

Don't blame America for AC/DC, my friend, they're Australian.

And comparing the Ramones to Metallica is considered an especially heineous crime.

screeching weasel is my fav. band. i suggest getting boogadax3 or my brain hurts first. or maybe get "weasel mania" if you just want a sample. its a 30ish song compilation of their "best" songs ever.

also the queers are one of my favs. they are more surf sounding, kinda like the beach boys. get "love songs for the retarded"

the lillingtons are great as well. i suggest getting "death by television"

just a few more, the buzzcocks, the bananas, the desecendants. THE ANGRY SAMOANS! nofx, rudimentary peni....

and so on...

I think the thing I like most about the Ramones is that you can dance to them. I've got pretty broad musical tastes, but usually like stuff with a good beat. The way you described The Queers, Josh, sounded appealing.

Somery is their best album.

Want me to include it in our prezzies trade?

Surprise me ;).

And I still haven't had time to get your stuff together. I'll do it over this Christmas weekend and get it out next week. I think Kirsten's going to throw something in there for you too.

I love the Ramones!!! The first few albums are all great. End of the Century is probably my favorite. It's the most unique one and the version of Rock n Roll Higschool on it is awesome.
