what did you decide to do with that mailbox flag hand concept?
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Aug 08 '11 at 8:09pm
still going to do it and i really liked the dog idea, wanted to get to work on that right away
skindapple
skindapple on Aug 08 '11 at 8:11pm
oh good! cool, how do you plan to use the dog?
Ellsswhere

I was either thinking of having a mailbox push him down or a mailbox trying to grab the leash as he is chasing the mailman down the street

I guess I'll start off
Safe

Cool idea for a blog

The execution on the safe is flawless, like most of the stuff I've seen you do. However I think I'm dumb or something because I'm not sure if I'm getting the full joke. Are they playing tag, and he's saying "safe" cause the safe is the base? or am I just a dunce

skindapple
skindapple on Aug 08 '11 at 8:33pm
ok ok...grabbing the leash would be pretty cool.
what if all the mailboxes had their hands up like it was a stick up?
or like a hostage situation?
you could even draw a school environment with dogs in a class being taught on the blackboard that when a flag is up a mail man is sure to show.
a mailbox could also be holding a leashed dog as protection from the mail man...knowing and not liking to get his face stuffed with mail.

oh woops, I hit post comment by accident without writing anything. That's an idea for loves horror I had...I guess it isn't the most original design ever, but does the execution, or what you can gather from it, save it? or is it just a super boring design on every level?
skindapple
skindapple on Aug 08 '11 at 8:38pm
i like the safe idea..
it would be cool to see the safe holding guns looking gangsta or like a cowboy keeping his gold coins and stacks o' cash SAFE!
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Aug 08 '11 at 8:47pm
yeah the concept was tag... i think i need 2 of them chasing each other to really draw the idea out

Jelly I actually really like the execution especially the glow, its what sells the concept, yes it has been done but Im not sure its been printed, and if thats the case its fair game... i say go for it and ill deff critique with the update

Apple you are just busting with ideas man, a lightbulb just burst above my head about this
'you could even draw a school environment with dogs in a class being taught on the blackboard that when a flag is up a mail man is sure to show.'

awesome! well thanks dude!
i'm not trying to push my luck, but i would love to collab with you (or anyone with sick skills for that matter..), but yeah, if you ever wanna toss ideas or sketches back and forth i'm down for sheezy!

if you wouldn't mind brutally critiquing my already finished scoring subs i would greatly appreciate it! i would like to know if it's my execution, colors, concepts, and/or whatever that just totally sucks. i know i just need to keep at it and all that jazz...but you could even post your critique on each sub itself to make it quick and easy! and in all honesty, if it just sucks, type it with any other feedback you might have!
thanks before hand, if you don't mind....
:)

this is another design im working on for loves horror. im liking the linework in the foreground, and decided to add a background to make it more interesting. the idea so far is to have smoke whirling between a tree, with leaves blowing. any thoughts on this? i guess i'd consider this one more complete than the other

Apple Juice is my favorite, then impossible split
I think apple juice just needs a little refining, you can simplify the top edge of the apple and the bottom could be a shadow using the brown instead of red, like a half tone
as for impossible split also simplify, no need for the scoreboard or the extra items

I like your stuff, honestly you were right when you said it just takes time, you eventually get a feel for the threadless crowds taste and can better design for them

Jelly i actually really like the background as is, reminds me of againstbound's stuff, what if you either added a texture to the black or placed a smoke type design in that section to break it up?
skindapple
skindapple on Aug 08 '11 at 9:59pm
alrighty, thanks for taking a look! i appreciate the comments!

for Impossible Split: does fred need his accessories? (cuz i thought they were great and love them...)

have you ever re-sub'd and old piece or reworked one and then re-sub'd it?!

skindapple on Aug 08 '11 at 10:05pm
@Jelly
i agree with Ellsswhere about the background.
it would be cool if you could create some elements of death through textures, patterns, creatures, earth/nature, skeletons...just something in the black...

Here is a new WIP I'm working on. I have a specific question. I had intended it to be crash landing on an alien planet with strange flora and fauna. Its going ok but its taken a blast from the past into a dinosaur age look. Which do you prefer?
Day 1
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Aug 09 '11 at 1:36pm
well it deff. has the dino feel because of the color selection and the winged creatures in the sky, but i would enjoy either one as its really up the the reader how they interpret it. i like the way you are bringing the cutout into the bg, what if you made that shape the doorway to his craft... like add a couple faded steps or a rim around the entire shape
Resistance

Cool blog! I'll try to help as much as I can...

This is great. I think the color used for the outline of the coins could maybe be darkened just a tad? Other than that, I think it is pretty spot on.

I like the feel, but what is the story being told here? Did death come to get her? Stuff that is in the genre but doesn't have a clear message/story/idea, needs to be spot on with the execution... so texture on the robe and skull would help.

This has massive potential. And I think dinos on another planet is completely awesome, so don't worry if you feel you have two worlds colliding. I dunno if the purple is working... probably looks better on the purple tee... the high contrast on the image makes it harsh tho.

Update!
Day 1 2

Ok, that ^ is awesome. I have nothing constructive to say about it. In fact, all I can do is make this face O0O and drink jealousy-flavored kool-aid. ACTUALLY NO, I'M A LIAR. I just realized that if anything at all, I might maybe perhaps think about adding one or two cool colors somewhere. But that's just a personal preference for cool colors, and everything I say should be taken with many grains of salt.

I humbly submit this
Better shading.

for criticism.

I'm especially interesting in background/ framing ideas. As it is now, I'm avoiding submission because it's lacking a certain oomph.

Update!

there's something optically odd about the astronaut's head/hand proportion compared to the rest of the body but that aside it's looking awesome

Tennis Ball on Aug 11 '11 at 9:09pm
i agree with reags I thing it looks like he could palm his entire head, but beside that i love all the improvements you made, it looks amazing

Nonny, hey how you doin... anyways i think if you erased the base of the tree with a grass texture brush to blend that into the shirt and as for bg i could see it either as a moonlit scene in the woods or maybe some sand dunes since the tree looks pretty beat up it could be in the desert

I've been looking for critiques on this design, but I didn't get them so I did what I could and came up with this. The wallpaper is just a placeholder for when I make a decent pattern to go over the stripes. How do you interpret the situation? Any other feedback is greatly appreciated!

he is seeing a false reflection of himself in a haunted mansion? at least thats my interpretation of it, so far i like what you have, being as nitpicky as I am i did some reworking of your characters to adjust for eyesight and center of gravity, feel free to ignore or use what i reworked, just suggestions

That's one way to see it haha. Internal conflict is another. Somebody else might see twins fighting for individuality. I had internal conflict in mind.
Thanks for taking the time to fix those flaws! Awesome suggestions that I will put to use!

Thanks for the advice, guys! Ok, so...
BG and stuff added.

Added:
-grassy things
-tree frame
-moon
-basic highlighting

Removed:
-distressing

I'm on the fence with the new frame. I like the silhouette, but getting it to fit in with everything else is a pain. Also, the longer I look at it, the more I want to remove some of the grass.

What say you?
Tennis Ball
Tennis Ball on Aug 15 '11 at 4:56pm
i say you are over analyzing the design, my suggestion, put it down and start a new design, come back to this is a week with fresh eyes, i like it without the border

is changing the opacity of a color frowned upon for printing purposes?
if not...does changing the color opacity create a new color?
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Aug 15 '11 at 5:32pm
in my kool-aid design i used different opacities of white on a red shirt to create the design and when i sent in the artwork i gave them both a halftoned version and a solid color version and they chose to print using each separate color. If you have reached your color limit they can either use simulated process or you can halftone your different opacities, if you havent reached your color limit then yes they would just opt to use the approximate color that would match
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Aug 15 '11 at 5:36pm
oh and nonny im on the fence about the frame too, can you do a mockup on a shirt thought, that might sell it
