I thought i would give you guys a try seeing as i dunno where to look...

I'm a real novice at AE and i was wondering what's the best way to save your footage/animation so it's the best quality. I saved my first AE footage as an MP4 but when i watched it outside of AE it wasn't as clean. i'm just playing around for now.

so, what's a good way of saving AE footage and keeping it clean so i can stick in vimeo?

Use Sorenson video 3 as your codec on medium quality. It will still look nice that way. I'd suggest that since you are putting it on vimeo, you can lower the audio settings, too, like on 44.100 instead of 48 hz or 64. Stereo is fine, but go mono for a smaller file size.

i'd suggest H.264. it's a nice playback codec which almost every computer has thru quicktime.

animation codec is essentially uncompressed. looks nice but you'llhave a large file

H.264 drops colors though :/ I really use Sorenson Video 3 for everything, even though it's older, I get the best combination of results with it.

Definitely do NOT render into mp4, same color dropping. Just by changing some settings on other things, you can get much closer to your intended animation and still have a smaller file size good for the internet.

i've never heard that complaint in using if for over 5 years.

i'll look into it.

H.264 isn't a little bit better than the other compression algorithms out there. It's not incrementally better. It's dramatically better. It's a whole world better. It's really mind-blowing. What I'm gonna do here is show you a side-by-side comparison of two pieces of video encoded from the same source, one encoded with the industry-standard Sorenson 3 codec and the other with H.264. The difference is gonna blow you away," Harrell writes.

here's the link:
