live trace isnt bad at times as long as the image/sketch is flawless and crisp defined edges but this design s puzzled me.

Tablet. For me, since I don't own a tablet yet, I just painstakingly make them look like hand-drawn in Illustrator using a mouse, which is very tiring.

What does everyone feel about livetrace tho as imm great at sketching but crap on macs... is it still a good way to get my designs on here.. are live traced images still acceptable to get idea across or are they regarded as cheating?

live trace will only look good if the settings are absolute perfect and the image is really clean.

it wouldnt be regarded cheating, its more "saving time".

"tablet mate. live trace is for idiots"

Actually generalisations are for idiots. My only print was live traced, and it works if you know what you're doing - like any tool. Clearly you don't.

This is all done in photoshop. I did a pen drawing and then scanned it into photoshop. I did a color range select, selecting the white of the paper, the inversing it. I cut the ink color and pasted it on its own layer, then cleared the background layer. I then used other layers for the colors, and Ross did an amazing job of figuring out how to make separations from it. So pretty much I drew it freehand, and just colored it on the computer.

I like the style of design.Remind me my style.
You can compare with my works, here:

Peace Above Hate - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

scarecrow on the scarecrow\'s head - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

HOLOGRAM ZOO - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

Everyone eat - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

I draw/sketch them, scan them, and autotrace result of scanning the black and white mode bitmap in coreltrace. it's so simple and fast. Then ...I just fill with the colors i want for the result of autotrace. But...sometime we must fix the little jaggy thing

oh, i didn't know slaterock already answered

but yes, i think photoshop is the best tool for line drawings. illustrator feels so limiting.
bananaphone
   bananaphone on Nov 07 '06 at 8:39pm
how so sonmi?

I prefer illustrator because I can resize any elements as big or small as I want. Though I come from more of a print design background than a pure art one, so illustrator is second nature.
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 07 '06 at 8:43pm
in regards to resizing, it's much more useful to have a vector. i guess that's where flash plays a good medium, because it has the fluidity of drawing with line weights that photoshop allows. unless illustrator does allow for line weights when drawing. i haven't used it that much, i guess.

Photoshop and illustrator are different. One is not better than the other... they should be used together to spread peace and joy.

Live trace is a great tool... it all depends on what you are tracing.

I can't imagine that anyone draws in flash. I find flash to be so counter-intuitive, that it hurts to use it.

It's like if Macromedia said 'hey guys, how can we write the clunkiest piece of non-intuitive junk?' This was Macromedia's general end-user philosophy.

I hope that adobe reworks it a tad to make it more accessible to those of us who don't have spare months to waste learning some program.
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 07 '06 at 8:48pm
flash is easy! you just use the drawing tool, and draw away. the only things i don't like is it tends to give a certain character to your lines... one that is very distinctive of flash. and also, when you zoom in, you often find flaws in your drawing. i used to draw with flash all the time, until i started doing photoshop at 300dpi. i like the results of that a lot.
jublin
   jublin on Nov 07 '06 at 8:49pm
i draw in flash.

though i would like adobe to mixmash some of their products and tools with macromedia now that they are a team.

When I have a blank piece of paper in front of me, I can't get anything started. I pretty much design for the first time, right in illustrator. I don't sketch or draw anything usually.

I dislike the physical act of drawing, I've always found it tedious and laborious.

someone needs to invent paper with snap to grid
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 07 '06 at 8:52pm
illustrator is good like that, because you can manipulate shapes into some kind of substantial idea.

i also dislike preliminary sketching. all of my drawings are usually done straight in photoshop.

I want to talk bad about drawing in flash as I think it is a total misuse of the program. But if Jubs does it then I will have to take another look at it.

"unless illustrator does allow for line weights when drawing. i haven't used it that much, i guess."

That's in your stroke settings sonmi. But if drawing with a tablet illustrator can also read your line pressures.
bananaphone
   bananaphone on Nov 07 '06 at 8:55pm
flash works for some people but if you are starting off, flash is not a drawing program. It's there to animate and make interactive website material, not design t-shirts.
spires
   spires on Nov 07 '06 at 8:55pm
BOO flashistrator

Just rewrite flash to act like an adobe program and call it a day.

Illustrator is great! YAY!

I've used photoshop for drawing, but I always feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot by starting out with a non-vector format. I think, 'hey, what if I ever want this image the size of a house? Then I'm screwed.'

im sure its probably not the most efficient way of getting what i want, but hey- you can get a good look at a butcher's ass by sticking your head up there, but wouldn't you rather to take his word for it?

i dont wear sneakers space. so the answer is YES.

one can import sketchy lines into illustrator

color range -- create paths -- 0.5 pixels -- drag and drop into illustrator

yeah illustrator was never my fav but after spending some time using it Ive found there are a lot of ways that you can use it to make things look natural
spires
   spires on Nov 07 '06 at 9:05pm
Got any tips for that? Creating from within illustrator, I usually just use the clean lines. I'm not really good with faking pencil stokes and stuff like that.
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 07 '06 at 9:05pm
interesting! i guess i just need to explore illustrator more. i just was getting frustrated having one stroke weight with very curved lines that liked to connect to each other. technical-wise, it's the only program i use when doing logos/substantial shape-based designs.
