Just curious to your preferred locking mechanism.
I bought a u-lock, but I'm returning it because it doesn't fit on my bike nicely and its heavy.
I bought a cable sort, but some people are telling me they aren't strong enough.

Just curious...

I have a cable lock that I carry around in a miniature fanny pack that goes on my bike. Not only does the fanny pack look awesome, it's functional as well.

cables are not very strong. The ulock was heavy but definately helped me keep my bike in one piece. Just remember "If it's not locked down it will walk away" wheels.. your seat... whatever. I had someone make off with my bike seat once cause I had no idea it came off.

In the end it really sorta depends on where you live and how bad bike theft is there. I lived in San Francisco and I think it has the worst rate of bike theft in the US. So yeah umm cables are a joke there.. people easily cut through them and walk off with bikes on a regular basis.

i have a pretty thick cable lock (combination). i don't really ride my bike much though because my town isn't very cyclist friendly.

Yes, thats the problem I had with my u-lock, besides the bracket being to big for my bike frame.

I don't think many people would want to steal my bike, seeing as I'm 5 feet tall and its an old jc penny bike, but I really love it and I don't want to leave it unprotected.

ideally, you just want your bike to be secured more than the bikes that are around it. if another bike locked up near yours is more easily stolen, they'll probably take that one.

with that... i use a u lock and put it in my bag (as opposed to attaching it to my frame.

That's a good idea (to look at ones around where I lock it up).

Like I said, my bike isn't very expensive looking, but some people have told me that it doesn't matter around our University Library - where most of the theft happens.

I saw one of those Dateline specials about bike theft--apparently there are professional bike thieves who just carry giant bolt cutters around with them to steak bikes. they did tests and the only ones the thieves couldn't cut through were the big u-locks. they snipped the cable locks like they were yarn.

some of them also have fake light poles that they just set on the ground, wait for someone to lock their bike to it, then lift up the pole and slide the lock out. amazing.

I avoid Dateline because it makes me afraid of everything.

Gah, I hope these people don't live in Salt Lake.

I have a U-lock type thing, just with a key, but the U bit is made of this stiff, thick kind of cable. When I'm riding I can force it to wrap around the handlebars so it's not in my way...bit tricky at first but works fine.

I learned my lesson back in Frankfurt Germany to NEVER use a cable lock! Funny story though....I found my bike within an hour at the main train station! Some Middle Eastern guys had it in a coffee shop!

when I was in Holland, I used to have one like this:

(the dictionary says they are called master link apparently..)

It's extremely heavy, but I could wrap it around the seat and my bike was never stolen and bikes get stolen often in Holland..

I had a second lock (cable) to attach the second wheel to the bike, so I didn't end up with only the bike frame and one wheel.. I bought a really cheap one first and the key broke of in it, when it was still on the bike, I managed to open the look with only pliers within 10 minutes.. so I guess they are not safe at all..

I heard that U-locks are good, but only good ones, cheap ones you can break open if you use some sort of lever..

eep. but the u-locks are sooo heavy.

maybe I will keep both, and take the u-lock when I'm leaving it alone for a long time.

these are also good I think.. often the lock itself is the weakest part if its not a cable lock
