Pizza blog: I need to make a spam pizza tonight.

Some friends are having a spam cook-off tonight. For my entry I'm thinking of making a spam pizza, unfortunately it has been ages since I've had spam, which I believe I have only ever tried once, so I'm not familiar with its taste (does it just taste like ham?) or what would go with it.

I'm going to be cooking this on a pizza stone, and I'm thinking of just going with a simple recipe using mozzarella and/or fontina cheese, onions, bell peppers, olives, and sliced spam, but I'm open to any suggestions any of you pizza experts might have (I don't like mushrooms).

I haven't had Spam in a long time. I remember it tasting like a salty mix of ham and bologna. Which is probably why I haven't had it since.

I don't thin i've ever even Spam, or ever will being a veggie.
I'ma big fan of just cheese and tomato. maybe chuck a little basil on there? that always taste good

I had thought about pineapple, since Hawaiian pizza seemed like an obvious route, but If I remember correctly I don't think some of my friends are fans of pineapple on their pizza. I'll probably be making more than one kind of pizza, so maybe I will make one Hawaiian.

The pizza pool on flickr really makes me hungry. I just wish more of them posted ingredients along with the pictures.

Im a traditionalist. I only really ever eat pepperoni pizza, and I never eat meat from a can, unless its wrapped in chef boyardeeeeee ravioli

Whos idea was the spam cook-off? It sounds like the kind of dirty antifood shennanigans that only the british could enjoy... Anyway, if you can't remember what spam tastes like I would suggest you munch down a forkful to remind yourself before adding any to the pizza. It tastes like ham would taste if ham was made from beaks and elbows boiled in sea water

So it's like a hot dog, and made with lips and assholes? Sounds good to me.

I think the spam was chosen because it's an unfamiliar ingredient. Kind of like the surprise mystery ingredient they would have to use on Iron Chef.

Yay for mechanically separated meats. Nothing like eating paste-like meat product produced by forcing beef, pork, turkey or chicken bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue.

Green onions sound like it may be good on it. And some nori. Just look into some hawaiian dishes and incorporate it into the pizza.

That reminds me of that rumor (totally false) that went around claiming that the reason Spam was so popular among the South Pacific cultures was because they were among the last to practice cannibalism, and spam tasted pretty close to human flesh.
