yup, in just a mere two hours (for us east coast people), the glorious powers that be will grant us all an extra hour of sleep, drunken halloween debauchery, or, in my case, frustrated, demoralizing school work.

and also, yup, it's Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time, like most people like to say.

quoth this delightful snippet on grammar:

Spelling and grammar

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Because of this, it would be more accurate to refer to DST as daylight-saving time. Similar examples would be a mind-expanding book or a man-eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, and Daylight Time Shifting more accurate, but neither is politically desirable.

wow, they changed already? they're ahead of the curve! i believe mine'll automatically switch over at 2am. it's really weird seeing a clock go "1:58.... 1:59.... 1:00". it's like deja vu all over again!

Have the world's longest 1 minute party from the first time 1:59 AM rolls around to the time the clock actually hits 2 AM. I suggest everyone should have one of these they're a great excuse to have an hour long party yet the clock only actually changes by 1 minute.

i love accurate and mildly-snarky discussion of grammar.

the phrase "It is a saving daylight kind of time." just made me so happy. it sounds like the kind of thing you'd say with a lot of excitement and jubilation, like you're proud of the kind of time you're declaring. i imagine you'd look like this:

Why is it called daylight anything when the change actually happens during the night-time? So shouldn't it be Night-Saving time? Or my personal favorite, Timeapalooza?
kevinwells
kevinwells on Oct 31 '09 at 11:27pm
aw, it's okay, liz. it's only a completely arbitrary and only vaguely logically-motivated concept imposed by the government to favor businesses that benefit from having more daylight later in the day when patrons are off work and have time to spend their money anyway. you're not missing out on much.

wow, so because of that A Way With Words podcast i just listened to, i learned for the very first time in my life that some people consider w to be a vowel. i've never heard that before. i've heard the whole "a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y" thing, but never "and sometimes w". now that i read about it on wikipedia, there is a huge whole world of vowelness that i never knew existed before! vowels, semivowels, close vowels, approximants, etc

who knew!

also, it's only 6 minutes till my clock rolls over!

as much as i appreciate your grammatical tidbit, i must correct you in that this is NOT daylight saving time. this is actually standard time that we're reverting to. in fact, we're actually losing daylight because it will now get darker earlier.

in a moment of fail I forgot all about this one time in college and went to the wrong class (for like 1/2 the class) because I didn't take the time change into account and was too hung over to quite realize i was in the wrong class... it was pretty funny.

I was quite hung over in my defense however.
