I should sit down and check out some more of Richard Linklater's movies because "Waking Life" is the 4th of four of his movies I've seen and I enjoyed the crap out of it. I love all the ideas that get batted around, but the rotoscoping is so beautiful and wonderful to look at on its own!
I got my degree as a painter, so seeing the way they put everything together is so much fun. Not surprisingly I have the same experience with Linklater's "A Scanner Darkly", which is certainly cleaner and much more realistic but still just gorgeous to see. Also, does anyone besides me feel like "Waking Life" is somewhat of a sequel to Linklater's first major film "Slacker"? Not to be confused with "Slackers". It seems like the dreamy, stream of consciousness vibe of "Slacker" is strangely solidified in the dream world of "Waking Life". It's like all those Austin slackers are lucidly living. "Slacker" is one of my all time favorites. I can watch that movie almost anytime. If you've not seen it, at least give it one shot. It seems to be a love/hate case, but I am wholeheartedly on the love side of the equation:
Young Foxy and Free recently asked me to design a poster for their Spring issue and I was beyond happy to make something excellent for them! This issue also features the work of Anne-Marie Manker, David Kaminsky, and musical wunderkinds Reptar.
YFF is a free creative quarterly magazine in Atlanta, Athens, Savannah and online. So if you happen to live in any of those cities and you'd like a copy of this, I recommend you keep your eyes peeled or, if you're extraordinarily adamant, you could probably ask the good folks at YFF where they've deposited the goods! ![]() This image is built entirely from found graphics. It took me hours to comb through my collection of imagery and cut out all the parts. In fact, there might be as many unused parts as there are used residing in the original file. Since it was the Spring issue, I wanted to do something pertinent, but was at a bit of a loss for a starting point. Stumped, I did what I always do: I researched on wikipedia. I zeroed in on pre-Christian seasonal festivals and imagery. I ended up choosing the subject of the Green Man as my centerpiece, and basically built the rest of the image around that. The title was a last minute choice, chiefly informed by the fact I made most of the poster while housebound, recovering from a broken foot. In several ways, "Cabana Fever" is a semi-continuation of the "Memory Beach" prints I started last year: ![]() Anyway, the newest issue of Young, Foxy, & Free should be hitting/already have hit the stands. Enjoy!
A little over a month ago, I got a message through flickr asking me to contribute a drawing to a book being compiled by The Tornado Family. They provided a list of top 5's from which I was asked to select one topic and illustrate in black and white.
I was torn between two options, top 5 celebrity crushes and top 5 favorite movies. I felt odd about just up and drawing a bunch of women, but I also didn't feel I had the time to draw whole scenes from movies either. So I combined the two: ![]() Out of all the women represented, I would have to say Shelley Duvall's my #1. I know it might seem weird to some because she fits the "horse face" classification, which is not widely popular, but she's a babe in the Shining. Hell, she's a hyper-awkward babe in "Popeye"! Anyway, that's my story and my drawing. It turned out pretty good, especially since I busted it all out in a few hours with not pencil prep sketch. Plus I've always wanted to draw that picture of Sean Young in Blade Runner; all that smoke just breaks down to a value/volume exercise, it's fun!

Digital collage of salvaged game imagery 11 x 17 inches I was recently asked to create a poster for Atlanta's Little Tybee (Facebook/Muxtape/Myspace). After sifting through my collection of almost 7,000 pixellated images, a lot of layering and a lot of recoloring, I am quite proud to present the present image: ![]() This image is 100% built from salvaged videogame and computer GUI imagery. I'm pretty stinkin' proud of this one :) Read all about it in LE BLOG.
Idea: Seeing as my current Threadless design revolves around the acronym N.P.R., I'm gonna have an acronym contest. Leave a comment on the submission page with however many ridiculous acronyms you can come up with for N.P.R.
Best acronym wins something, regardless of whether I get printed or not. Make sure you leave it on the submission page! ![]() Possible prizes: *A hand-drawn shirt *A Signed Print: ![]() A set of original postcards: ![]() Gracias! ( ´ ▽ ` )
Hello Threadless,
I would like to make more use of the blog feature here, so I figured I'd restart with an animation I helped make. How did I help make it, you may ask? I provided the drawings and my friend Aaron made the drawings move and dance and basically eat themselves! Sounds great, right? So, without any further ado: Xxzxcuzx Me Video from Crabfood on Vimeo. I hope you enjoyed it! More posts soon! |
