Howdy all!

So there's an idea floating around for an upcoming LOVES challenge and we'd like to run it by you to get your thoughts!

How would you feel about a design challenge where the object was: Create an amazing tee design meant to be "finished" by the purchaser in whatever way the designer deemed fit?

Without trying to extrapolate/explain anymore, how does that general idea grab you?

that would be fun... i think i'd enjoy it more than just like... designing for some random topic...

it'd be fun to involve the client in the process.

I predict lots of dot to dot designs but I guess it would be a fun idea.

Threadless loves Street Art
Threadless Loves Pets
Threadless loves Endangered Animals
Threadless loves backprints
Threadless loves black Tees
Threadless loves children and parent designs.

Just throwing some ideas out there.

it should come with the supplies to finish it.

Fabric pens or something.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Jun 23 '10 at 1:30pm
i'm just wondering how a shirt could be finished, though. would fabric markers or other supplies be included with the shirt?

All noted. This particular idea is for a specific partner, though. Hence my question!

I think something like that might work out to be more successful... Everyone can submit a 60-70% completed design and then Threadless selects an alumni to finish it. Sort-of like an official collab. Maybe something like this could become more of a monthly thing.

The 'buyer finishes it' is too gimmicky.

Depends on the prize. If its nice I'm all for it..if its a nonprize like the hoodies challenge I'd say no.

I'm sure Upso has contacts there, but I know the guy who redesigned the whole magazine for upper playground, so I could get a hold of him and see if that's a possibility.

Innovative, but I'm not sure it would be a great idea, in terms of producing shirts that would be popular and wearable. I'm imagining those activity books where it's like half of a body, and you draw the head, or draw in the scene to see what's in the magic mirror.

i'm going to do a shirt that says CUT YOUR HAIR HIPPY and it comes with rubber bands and stuff so you can tie-dye it.

I'm pretty much too lazy and lack the talent to do any completing of designs, should they come with fabric markers or whatever. it would look visibly amateurish compared to anything screen printed. And as far as physically modifying the shirt, people who choose to already do that anyway.
bortwein
   bortwein on Jun 23 '10 at 1:45pm
I'm not really a fan of the idea so I would probably just not submit anything for the contest. It will be really interesting to see the submissions and how they explain the method of how to finish the consumer custom tee.

It would be interesting for us to design, sure, but how much fun would it be for the buyer, as he's essentially buying half a design?

The contest would assume that the end consumer is crafty and has a desire to customize the tee once they purchase it. Would the shirt come with a free Sharpie? I thought I saw some hint or spoiler around here some where that Threadless and Sharpie might team up for a Loves. Is that what this is all about?

Would this be like using a printing technique that allows one to write on the shirt via marker or something, example would be a "Hello, my name is (place on a white printed background, which allows marker writing)...then the user would scribble their name" ?
