i dont think i've ever seen a cicada, so i'm a bit worry. I hope a splash of spf-15 lotion will protect me.

You've never seen a cicada?

One flew into my car once and died in front of me on the dashboard. It was pretty hilarious.

no? they only emerge every 17 years, or that's what the news lady told me on the tube.

they came a few years back in northern virginia...
their eyesight sucks so if there are a lot of them, you're bound to be hit by some

In the Mid-Atlantic area they came out around 2002, I believe. There were hundred of them everywhere but like dunzo said, because they come out of the ground after such a long period of time they cant see too well. The only thing that sucks about them is that once they get on you they really latch on, and girls need to be careful about hairspray becuase they can't get out of that.

They are also quite flammable.

Cicadas are something I remember since I was a little kid. Greece gets them every summer in their thousands and i bet most Mediterranean countries too.
The sound they make during the day is hypnotizing especially during siesta time when you are tired and ready to go to sleep. You can't have a greek summer without cicadas.

Yeah I think I saw them about 2002... I didn't know they only came out after certain amount of years.

I can't believe I forgot about the sound!

I also have kept one frozen in the basement freezer. The ones we got usually had red eyes and it was rare to find them with blue eyes so when I found one I kept it.
Does that make me weird?

Was an annual one in Chicago so I guess I saw this one.

Some of them come out every year, it depends on what species you get in your area.

The ones we get are just plain gray/brown and camouflage themselves on the tree trunks perfect. Especially on the olive trees they are really hard to spot. We used to as kids try to catch them and spend hours at doing so.

The shells are really cool to collect.

I just went to go take a picture of my frozen cicada and it turns out that my mother threw him away.
My poor little Hans has been thrown out :(

We had a Phillipina nanny who used to catch them, clip their toenails, tie thread to them and let them fly around as live kites. It was fascinating!

I would've named him Jacques

I did name him Hans! He was a wonderful pet until I froze him.
Jacques is a good name too.

The grandmother of one of my friends would catch them, freeze them, and then coat them in chocolate and eat them...apparently they are tasty.
