But I doubt its controversial.

If you wanted to refer to someone who was of Indian heritage (as in ancestors from India) but was born in the US, could you call them "American-Indians" or would people think you were talking about Native Americans?

Its for an English essay.

I think you can call them Americans. People who live in America are Americans, not Indian-Americans, not African-Americans. I'll only refer to someone with the hybrid name if they were actually born in that country, otherwise they're American.

I don't ask to be called European American, even though my ancestors most likely came from Europe.

Yeah, its important for the essay that I somehow mention that they are of Indian heritage, but as succinctly as possible.

Skipper, I live in American.
but I was born in Canada and I have a Canadian and Polish citizenship.
You can't call me American can you?
maddingo
maddingo on Dec 19 '06 at 8:51pm
i believe that people would generally say American of Indian decent

or Indian American

much like I am an American of Transylvanian decent

stooopid Columbus and his mistaking America for India....sigh

Skipper6745
   Skipper6745 on Dec 19 '06 at 8:51pm
I can call you that if you want, or I can call you Canadian-American because you were actually born there.

But do people really say 'Polish- or Canadian-American'? Why is no special attention given to smaller groups?

I'd rather be called Polish-Canadian. And from hence forth you shall refer to me as such.
Got it!?

No one cares about the smaller groups. : (

how did they refer to this country?

did the *insert proper name here* have a name for this country as a whole?

that's my big question.

I'm Indian-American

I was born in America, but my parents are Indian.

Native Americans are whiny illiterate alcoholics with no work ethic.

Or so I've not been taught.

My ancestry is from India.. they moved to New Zealand.. and at first were Indian but soon became New Zealanders...and had kids... and then I came around... a New Zealander.. then I moved to Australia, where for a while I was a New Zealander living in Australia.... now I'm just Australian! (except when the rugby is on... then I'm a kiwi)

that's just what the history books say... and look who wrote them....

there's actually quite a lot of proof to the contrary ;)

to answer the original question:

I believe the current PC term is "Asian Indians in America" or "x-generation Asian Indians in America", etc.

gordond: you shouldn't confuse the issue - but there were hundreds of independent nations with their own languages - they tended to (in general) refer to areas by who lived there (although that's really oversimplifying things)
