Clever but dogs actually can see colour. They don't see colour like us - we have three sets of cones so we can distinguish red, green and blue (plus shades inbetween). They have two sets of cones, red and green, so they see like a colour-blind human. To a dog, red yellow and green all look basically the same but blue, white and black look different. Which is why my dog loves blue and white coloured toys, they contrast well against green grass.
