What did you think of the ECCA talk?

'Making money out of your creativity'.....just realised you were the 'threadless guy'.

I left part way through (just after that open sourcing women had spoken). Thought the whlole thing was pretty appalling...although what are you to expect when you attend at seminar with such a title haha!

Oh, cool. I thought you might be there! You're at Wimbledon, right?

Yeah - the lady organising it, Em was disappointed I think. I turned into an advert for 'OpenAd', and wasn't a debate at all. I think Em is going to try to follow up on it and is going to do some Podcasts, possibly. Will let you know if I'm invited to help out ECCA again.

id steer clear of open ad...she started off on one about people using copyrighted images and things like that and i was thinking any decent/well-taught graphic designer knows the principles of these laws and understands that you dont get your reference images from google images...thats the main problem i think with open sourcing....because it allows anyone to enter you get a lot of people who dont understand the basic fundamentals of design 'laws' or practise so there is so much plagerism and tat filtering out the genuine fresh talent and ideas.

plus through open ad you sell your ideas (supported by visuals) and thecompanies which buy them arent oblidged to use you for the designing or production....all in all it just sounded really dodgy to me.

she also seemed to think that the fact they had 10,000 'creative minds' signed up to the site was a positive thing... :-/

hrrrm.

aled - I've written a 'response' to the talk, was thinking of hosting it online, put maybe ill just send amessage to Em to see if she is actually going to do some podcasts or something...she seemed pretty sound when I spoke to her.

the thing about open ad is that it feels like it doesn't really stop ad creatives going on there and using ideas on there and changing it up a bit. i bet there's a lot of concept ideas on there that are similar too. there's a lot of trust on there me thinks, hmm...

OpenAd sounds like balls. They're farming creative minds and it seems to be undermining the industry. They call them 'Creatives' which freaks me out a bit. I imagine they're sitting in their big offices smoking their cigars. Even one of the most successful OpenAd creatives said quote "Fuck no, our success is an exception to the rule - you can't make a living out of it".

There needs to be much better regulation. Unfortunately, the design industry is quite new and is one of the only professions at the moment without a charter scheme (i.e. Chartered Engineers, Chartered Architects) so there is very little protection and not a strong ethical code for designers. It's a shame there wasn't more of a discussion, as I would probably have had quite a lot to say.

I'm at London Metropolitan Uni. Just in my final year of Graphic Design.
