deus ex machina means "god is in the machine" or "god from the machine" in latin and is a term applied to a work of fiction that describes an event, character or story device that occurs improbably to solve a situation or make the plot flow more smoothly towards a conclusion. In other words...it's like God himself is inside the workings of the story, guiding events so they will lead towards the intended conclusion.

It also applies loosely to any lazy literary device that rescues the heroes of a narrative conveniently. An example would be the characters in the movie Romancing The Stone being rescued by a sand storm at the last possible moment. It's a lazy literary device, in other words. The Greeks would literally have the gods intervene to save the hero when literary imagination failed to provide a creative solution to a plot predicament.
