We got our little garden going yesterday! So far we have:

white & yellow corn
red corn!
carrots
radishes
green beans
broccoli
purple beans!
sunflowers
broccoli-flower
mixed pimento peppers that are red, yellow, orange and purple
basil
scallions
strawberries
mint

We have to get some more plants when they're ready:

tomatoes
eggplant
green peppers
cucumbers

Do you have any recommendations? We've tried watermelons before and they never seem to work. :(

Cantaloupe

Watermelon

Red Potatoes

Radish

And a bunch of other stuff that I can't think of.

Well the actual "garden" area is only about 8'x8'. We have stuff in stair planters too.

You need a fence, Matt!

Oooh I want to grow peas too! Do you do anything special for the melons, Derek?

i have one big orange pumpkin. i planted the seeds from the one i carved at halloween but because they didn't flower until after summer there's no bees around to pollenate them so i was doing it myself and only managed a single one.

I am growing a passion for being covered in dirt.

Also, my friend grows cabbage, blueberries, strawberries, and pot.

I accidentally grow sunflowers in our indoor riding arena every summer.

At least you got one, Leon!

I want to try blueberries, Sarah! How do you accidentally grow sunflowers?
mooseinmyshoe
mooseinmyshoe on Mar 21 '10 at 3:52pm
I teach riding camp in there, and I gave my counselors sunflower seeds to shut them up about being tired, and I guess they accidentally spit out some seeds with the shells.

I'm wondering how they grow in the dark!

I keep trying to start grape vines and blueberry bushes, but my German Shepard keeps eating the plants.

I grow tomatoes and peppers in pots every year.

it's too early to be planting anything here right now, and many of the garden centers don't have much of a selection yet, other than frost tolerant flowers, but i've turned my beds over & have been prepping them for planting.

i'm not fully decided what i'm planting this year, tomatoes are a given, i did buy some moon & stars melon seeds off the internet, that i'm pretty excited about.

this last year i grew:

several varieties of large heirloom tomatoes

roma tomatoes

cherry tomatoes

acorn squash

banana peppers

bell peppers

green beans

purple green beans

green table grapes

quince

apricots

feverfew

lavender

mint

spearmint

pineapple mint

gotta love that mint!

i also started a marionberry plant, but those take time.

i won't even get started on the flowers & such.

way too many to list...

I wish I could grow a garden. We don't even get much natural light in here. Mostly I'm going to grow chubby and pasty.

Oh yea! We grow hay at the barn.

And then we bale it, and we stack it in the barn. And by 'we', I mostly mean I.

We store at least 12,000 bales, but we put up around 14,000 (people take them out of the lofts while we're still filling them).

My hands touch almost every bale that goes into the barns.

So far we've had broccoli, tomatoes (yellow and red) strawberries, banana peppers, peas, cucumbers and an absurd amount of mint. They've all been yummy!

I just got a bunch of herbs for my apartment! Rosemary, purple basil (purple pesto will be the best), oregano, lavender, parsley, and this awesome chocolate mint plant. It really smells and tastes that chocolate mint. I'm going to take a cutting from my mum's lemon mint too.
Polyester Jones
Polyester Jones on Jul 25 '10 at 3:19pm
Where are you growing stuff? I wonder if there are any vegetables that would do okay on a balcony/apartment. In my experience zucchini grows anywhere. Tomatoes would probably be okay because we get a lot of sun, as long as they don't get too dry.
squeegebeckenheim
squeegebeckenheim on Jul 25 '10 at 3:28pm
PURPLE PESTO SOUNDS AMAZING!

We have a little garden patch in our side yard. It gets full sun in the early morning, then partial sun the rest of the day and it seems to all be doing pretty well.

Cucumbers and tomatoes would probably work for you but the cucumbers spread like crazy!

I killed my squash. But I do container gardening and it is too too too too too hot right now on my balcony :(
Polyester Jones
Polyester Jones on Jul 25 '10 at 8:09pm
yeah, any cucumbers or squash would probably spread too far for my pathetic little balcony. I'm considering tomatoes.
My best friend as a kid had a tiny little orange tree growing in her house. It bore fruit, too. I wonder about that.
