While I have a lot of respect for Ghostpatrol as an artist and personally, the hard reality is that Stencil Artists have been making cultural capital out of stolen images for a very long time. Now, I know that GP doesn't - he's an incredibly prolific and original artist, but the unfortunate fact is that the medium he has chosen - graffiti - and the subgenre he has chosen - stenciling - are about appropriation and re use. Admittedly, the fact that this person tried to make a buck out of something that didn't belong to them is dodgy, but GP will get over it - it certainly isn't the only image he's ever made. I know for a fact that GP has done stencil images before that he has made money off - I bought a 12" record that had been painted on one side and then stenciled onto. I can't be sure, but it looks like an image of Billy Bragg. It was in a pile of stuff I picked up from him, it only cost me AUS$20 and I didn't care then either. It must have been a $4 share from the stuff I got from him. Even if he had made the image - the record wasn't really his to make money off either. I'm glad that this has been resolved, and I'm stoked that GP and Miso are invited into the threadless fold because it will make threadless so much more. Please note that I do have a problem with Corporations stealing from artists, but you could hardly call a lone submitter on Threadless a Corporation. I think that there has been a storm in a tea cup. I haven't submitted any photos. I guess I don't want free money.
