What is your oppinion about subs that have things whic you recognize to be from a specific program, or other such recognizable feature? For example, one of the photoshop special effect brushes is used as a main feature in the sub... does that automatically count it out for you, degrade it a bit, or have no effect on the design (in your oppinion)?

I personally feel somewhere in the middle... It's not easy to make custom brushes that look good, and if you don't have illustrator, paths are a bitch...

depends, but it's normaly a sign of lazyness.

paths with photoshop aren't that much harder than paths with illustrator. it's only once you close the path that it becomes difficult.

Typically, I'm against it, but I suppose it would be possible to do if it were in a really ironic, threadless-esque way. Even then, it probably wouldn't make a good shirt...

Agreed with all of the above.

When I recognize a display font (action is, girls are weird, curlz, etc.) I instantly think BLAH and lose interest. Same thing goes with clip art and Illustrator brushes. If you've seen the elements before, then it's nothing special.

not for threadless but in my digital art, designs or photomanips i use my own brushes i defined with photoshop. i think those programs should be just to help you not to do your design. or then everybody has the same thing at the end.

i think font usage is very important. if you are using a font you shouldn't use it like it comes. sometimes you have to fix between the letters or words. some fonts like curlz are not actually fonts. they are like symbols or shapes so even if you write anything else with it it turns into the same everybody writes. so in my opinion most of the time you should know some typography to deal with the fonts.

to me it makes it look messy and cheap

wow, that's a pretty overwhelming consensus...

I didn't even think about the font issue. The thing I HATE is Comic Sans... it's almost insulting to see when you read it... like accusing you of being immature or something.

I do paths with photoshop and it works fine with me.

Recognising elements from books, such as the clip art book. Use of brushes from illustrator.

Do most people here use Illustrator or Photoshop? I use freehand, its great for path drawing. But, alas, its days are probably numbered.

If I see something composed entirely of a brush or something, I'm probably not going to grade it very high. It just doesn't look like the effort was really put there.

Of course, since I have a tendency to make vectors in a raster-based program, I can't talk.
