What I'm aspiring to in the future is making Threadless.com less commerce heavy and a lot more community heavy. A super inspiring place for artists and art appreciators to hang out and make awesome art together. Sharing artist stories (we're trying to do video profiles for every single Made artist now) … allowing people to follow artists and get notified when they submit new designs. Basically putting artists on a pedestal everywhere we possibly can.

We'd still sell designs on Threadless but we'd leverage partnerships even more to better commercialize the designs and make you guys $$$ while still telling your stories at retail. We will always credit the artist, and try to tell their stories wherever we can even through partnerships. But in order to make these partnerships reality we need to be able to sell the designs to the partner. We can't walk in and try to sell something to a partner that we don't actually have the rights to sell.

So if we make two contracts, I want to make sure you guys are aware of what you'd be passing up if you chose the one that would restrict us to commercialize your design at retail and make Threadless a more sacred place.

This is a major sea change for this company.

Essentially you're going from a company that happily and vocally turned down offers from target and urban outfitters to one seeking partnerships.

From advocating the 'Long Tail' of commerce to now a general appealing to the masses.

From being clear what the parameters, rights and payments were to a nebulous 'based on what it’s printed on'

These changes don't sit well with the change to a work-for-hire contract. And these changes do not make you the same company that attracted high-talent artists and an engaged community.

  • but the safeguard there is that IF threadless actually did that, people would stop submitting, so then that couldn't happen. It seems like there is a fear about possiblilites of things that could happen, but I dont think they actually could happen, because the community would react like this, and the policy would change to get people back. It would be badbad bad for business for threadless to do as you suggested is possible.

what that means is that if threadless now gets works under work-for-hire contracts, future (possibly evil) threadless could use those in any way in the future for anything. Any backlash then would be late and impotent

Saying shit like " well if you dont like it, then GTFO " is rude response to Andy's genuine concern for his fellow artists.

    well said

  • yeah I'm against this too. makes a reason to stop submitting here.

as AlanBao succinctly stated, work-for-hire is a change for the worse that no other online tshirt company does. The time to contact artists when 99% say yes doesn't hold water for me.

All these pie in the sky people don't realize that all these changes mean threadless the friend could easily turn into something else that uses the work-for-hire model at it's worst...not crediting the artist, turning it into a load of awful products, working with horrible partners (walmart, fast food, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, viacom, etc.)

It's a shame, this place used to be something amazing
