danrule
   danrule on May 11 '08 at 1:59pm
I guess, which would you actually pay $ to wear...and how many people would get the reference on the left?
Mountain Gnome
Mountain Gnome on May 11 '08 at 1:59pm
indeed hard choice, but i'd go for the axe one
blossompossum
blossompossum on May 11 '08 at 2:05pm
Yeah, I prefer the one on the left. They're both great, though.

is that a gun? AHHHHHHHHHH, RUN

i don't know what it's a reference too but i think the tommy gun is sooper kool
danrule
   danrule on May 11 '08 at 2:34pm
thanks shirt, the first one references the novel crime & punishment. whereas the other references the idea.

emphasis on &

i prefer both. sorry
blossompossum
blossompossum on May 11 '08 at 2:36pm
It's a reference to Crime and Punishment, the novel. The main character kills a woman with an axe and is eventually sent to a labour camp in Siberia. And the hat fits the description of that he wears in the book.
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 11 '08 at 2:36pm
haha, no shit. i thought that's what it and then promptly said, that can't be it.

damn myself

shirtflirt on May 11 '08 at 2:36pm

Gah, I didn't refresh the page.

both great.
danrule
   danrule on May 11 '08 at 2:39pm
wow blossom, even picked up the hat! I thought I could only dream of an audience that would pick up on that.
valorandvellum
   valorandvellum on May 11 '08 at 2:39pm
They're both good, but I feel like the ax one should be rotated slightly counter-clockwise.

i like teh axe bettter
blossompossum
blossompossum on May 11 '08 at 2:41pm
Haha, it's because I've read it recently, so the details are still fresh in my mind.
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 11 '08 at 2:42pm
yeah, if it's a reference to the novel go with A
an interpretation, B

only you can decide methinks

the one on the left is better, i think. Stick with the truer reference.
SheepMan22
SheepMan22 on May 11 '08 at 2:43pm
definitly the one wit da axe
danrule
   danrule on May 11 '08 at 2:45pm
thanks all, shirt brings up a good point. I think I'm more interested in conveying the concept of C&P than the novel...

me and a friend how also draw sitting next to me both said axe
opifan64
   opifan64 on May 11 '08 at 3:22pm
I prefer the left version, both for the direct reference, and visually it seems more harmonious to me. the slight gap between the weapon and "&" also helps convey the arm better. they're both great though.
BaronVonMonkey
BaronVonMonkey on May 11 '08 at 3:30pm
Definitely, no 1, for the reasons already mentioned and because in the second one the ampersand could be misconstrued as a pretzel
Framble
Framble on May 11 '08 at 3:33pm
I like the big scary gun...
MrDomino
   MrDomino on May 11 '08 at 3:34pm
I would never have thought the second was a pretzel, but after Monkey said it I can't see it as anything else.
danrule
   danrule on May 12 '08 at 7:15am
thanks peeps, I'm thinking of going with the gangster one just because I don't think many would get the literary reference. I'll adjust the hand to take away the pretzelness.
d3d
   d3d on May 12 '08 at 7:55am
i didn't get it but i presumed it was something to do with crime and punishment. i prefer the axe and tophat, no question. plus a lot of people go "gun=0$".
danrule
   danrule on May 12 '08 at 8:27am
good point. has anything ever been produced here with a gun on it?

I thought a tommy gun would be separated enough from current reality...it's almost cartoon violence
pickledbib
pickledbib on May 12 '08 at 8:32am
the first one... works better for the concept... and d3d could be right about the gun=$0 theory.
elleevee
   elleevee on May 12 '08 at 8:41am
definitely the axe.
there have been a few subs with guns like Home Sweet Home
danrule
   danrule on May 12 '08 at 8:56am
But don't you have to know the book to understand the ax version?
danrule
   danrule on May 12 '08 at 9:07am
took priscilla's advice for the hand
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on May 12 '08 at 9:09am
The ax is better, ref or no ref.

axe version is the best
lunchboxbrain
lunchboxbrain on May 12 '08 at 9:20am
i think the tommy gun version would be well received.
d3d
   d3d on May 12 '08 at 9:33am
i have a print with a tommygun on it so it's not necessarily the kiss of death, but i still prefer the look of the axe.
danrule
   danrule on May 12 '08 at 9:40am
oh yeah I forgot that one Leon, it's a great image and idea.
d3d
   d3d on May 12 '08 at 9:47am
how about one with the tommygun and the tophat? i just don't like the bowler as much.
ladrones
   ladrones on May 12 '08 at 9:54am
i dont get the literary referances, because reading is for gays , but i enjoy the imagery with out knowing its "gay-smart-person" meaning
Flying Mouse
Flying Mouse on May 12 '08 at 9:57am
Looking good. I will go for the right one, because I feel the axe one going cut off his own hand.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on May 12 '08 at 10:13am
Yeah, have to agree with Flying Mouse, he looks like he's desperate to escape and will cut his own hand off to do it. (He tried chopping the chain first but the axe just won't cut through metal, wasn't that a trap in one of the Saw movies?)
danrule
   danrule on May 12 '08 at 10:20am
Great point FM, you are absolutely right.
Raid71
   Raid71 on May 12 '08 at 10:25am
the axe idea makes sense; but it's such an iconic image, I'd be happy to go with either
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on May 12 '08 at 10:53am

i don't see it
