Threadless

I recently submitted my first two designs to Threadless and was anxiously awaiting for them to go up for voting to see what people thought. But I found out today that both were rejected because they didn't pass the initial judging panel. :(

I realize they may not be fantastic designs, but I was honestly kinda surprised that they were "bad" enough to not even get to the voting stage. Am I missing something?

If not, I'd love to get peoples opinions and thoughts on the designs, regardless. Links to .swf files:

I think the flash files are the wrong dimension. Make sure that in flash, your document settings are set to 640x480.

No, the dimensions are right... Photobucket just automatically makes .swf files fullscreen. Also, the rejection e-mail said, "Sorry, your design was not accepted by the initial panel of Judges. Even though your design may be submitted properly, we do decline some submissions for poor design."

Probably because they're too simple.

Yeah, they're really way too simple. If it did get through, you'd be lucky to get anything past a 1 on the average. Sorry dude, try and take a look at the level of sophistication that gets printed here.

yeah, I'm wrong. katiethemofo might be right, but i've seen simpler designs than yours up for voting.

It's probably not the simplicity, more the actual design they dont like. Dont be disheartend though, just try something else.

I get that they're simple and I totally hear that. I personally like simple designs for t-shirts, but I understand a lot of people don't. Really the confusion for me, like slaterock said, is more about the many FAR simpler designs that do go to voting (I vote every day. I love Threadless).

As I said before, I'm not shocked that I didn't get printed or that pepople didn't like my design... I'm just shocked it wasn't allowed to even be voted on.

I didn't want to be a jerk and say that they sucked, simple was the best word I could come up with. Heh.

I'm far too nicer than I need to be.

The things that get through to the voting process is really odd sometimes. They have different people that do the approval process, so what one person might find acceptable anouther may not. Also, sometimes they're just lazy.

=P

Honesty noted and appreciated, Katie. Hey, I never said I was a designer! =)

Perhaps I'll just go back to voting on other people's designs...

I've gotten rejected as well.

Some of my stuff really sucked bad.

But, it made me learn new techniques and try harder!

didnt take the time to read all the comments sorry, but my guess is that they are just too simple, i think to pull something like that off you have to establish yourself as a designer here. Not that they are bad, but they are just basically a few lines that take up 10% of the shirt.

Design is alot like anything else, brainstorm for a long time about what you want to draw or convey, then sketch out 50 or so small thumbnails/drawings. Go back over them and pick the one or two or three you like the most and develop it further.

Oh and just have fun, dont get discouraged by this, it might have actually been a good thing, had it gotten through alot of the ignorant people that decide to comment might have told you the same thing threadless said but in MUCH harsher words.

I don't think it's only about simplicity and though suckitude stands as a probable explanation, I think it can be also explained. Like for instance variety. You use lines as the main element of your design, and yet they are all the same width.

You are creating a graphic image in a world that is highly iconographic and therefore that is used to different levels of visual complexity. To notice this you could study other's images in terms of the elements they are using. Specially of those you like the most.

But, I honestly think your design has potential. Being the theme "i see you" you could do everything with eyes. Like instead of one big eye and a smaller one you could make tiny eyes and use them as elements to create the nose, the mouth, the hair.. so it would really be "I see you".

Another thing that works for me is associating the image I'm using with other images. For instance an eye looks like a fish (if you put a tail in the end) and from there you can think of what the eyelashes would be for a fish.. (to exemplify what I'm talking about I designed this http://qlaudiaq.buzznet.com/user/photos/?id=2797509). What I did is not supercomplex in terms of readings but it still gives you 2 different readings and goes in the way of complexification (wonder if this is awork)

Phew.

That's a lot of letters. Hope you find it useful.
