Hey guys! It's been quite a while since I've shown my face around here...

Anyway, I've recently decided that I want to become an illustrator after I graduate with my BFA in painting and go to grad school for illustration (btw, any good schools?).

So I'm in an advanced painting class this semester doing an independent study and I've decided to create 30 paintings exploring techniques, media, and materials to build a portfolio as an illustrator for grad school (and to start taking commissions and market myself).

To the point! I've created a blog to update with my progress throughout the semester. I have EIGHT paintings uploaded so far... I really need the criticism, comments, cheering on, etc... general enthusiasm. Also links to artists I may like and so on.

30 Paintings Blog.

If you have livejournal, please add me! Otherwise, I will continue to update on here, as there is a massive amount of talented illustrators and designers here on ol Threadless. :D

PS: One of them, "Milk-Eyed Mender" is being printed in Curvy 05! It showcases the 100 best female illustrators and graphic designers. SWEET.

I think your photography is really great, it'd be nice to see that become more a part of your paintings.

thanks everyone!

Robsoul: actually, I do work photography with my paintings. I haven't uploaded any of it yet that's finished, but I use liquid emulsion on watercolor paper, print images, and paint on top of them.

here's an example: http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v129/191/24/23201862/n23201862_32709174_6251.jpg

castle - looked her up. WOW. I love her work! I haven't seen it until now. She uses oils, though. I'm working with watercolor and gouache...

ooh, now I actually wish I hadn't seen her work, haha. Afraid it'll influence me too much. :/

the audrey thing i think was in reference to teh style not so much the medium ..you work alot like her it seems letting teh wood show through i would say try and make it even more a part of the painting

also bone up a lot on digital skills if you dont already have them as its faster than traditional and more easily sent to clients.

Audrey Kawasaki is my livejournal friend! I forget her username, though. It may be...."i-seldom-do?"

wullaguru - thanks! anything on SCAD atlanta for illustration? closest to me.

the wood thing is brand new to me as well. I'm actually a tad frustrated that someone else has such a developed style that I've been attempting, but that's just one facet of it. I'll really have to watch out so I don't find myself too influenced by her.

I have digital skills, haha. I just prefer traditional work and actually being in contact with what I'm doing. I'd use photoshop to touch up on things or to change colors slightly. But I can't handle purely digital work. Drives me crazy.

amaliaslash: I added her!

bookmarked and oh yeah im gonna be stealing some of your process from sea witch, i have to try out some of those tech. for myself, very appealing, how heavy was that watercolor paper... seems with all of the washes you used it would start to just fall apart

Oh yeah? Are you familiar with liquid silver emulsion? That's how I got the photograph. There's a lot of work involved with it, so best of luck!

I'm not sure off of the top of my head, but I'm going to guess 300lb? No matter how many washes and stains I do, it never tears or gives way. Strong stuff!
