Velvetsamurai already really helped me by posting in her blog about my situation, and much to my pleasent surprise, a few of you have already donated some money.

If you guys don't remember the awesomeness of my cat, Toulouse, a picture might help you remember. He was about 2 months old here. Now he's 9 months old and huge!

Here's what's going on:

Toulouse has been really sick. We (me and the emergency vet I took him to yesterday) don't know what's wrong.

Here were his symptoms:

-vomiting
-little to no eating
-little to no drinking
-not um, pooping
-lethargic
-lost weight
-black poop
-slightly enlarged kidneys
-not himself at all
-uncomfortable/pain in the abdomen

The vet bill was $410.03. Of course, I'd pay as much as needed to see him better. He's only 9 months old and an exceptional cat and very very dear to me. I couldn't stand to lose him.

At the emergency vet, they took x rays and found that his kidneys were slightly larger than they should be, but nothing else. They gave him an injection of fluids because he was dehydrated, and a couple of other drugs. They wanted to keep him overnight, but I can't afford any more. So we're doing outpatient care. I'm giving him amoxicillin and pepcid twice a day. I think that's helping.

Anyway, I hate to put this out there, but I am extremely low on money. I'm losing my job next Friday and don't have anything else lined up yet. I can only pay $90 of that bill. I had no choice but to overdraft my account and try to pay it off over time, since the vet demanded money up front. And my parents won't help (don't even get me started on my conversation with my Dad in asking for a loan on the money).

If any of you feeling particularly generous, I would appreciate any donations to my paypal account: leliaeophelia@yahoo.com. If you want to lend me money and have me pay you back later, that can also work.

Some good news is that lately he's been improving a lot. He's finally eating (the only thing that works is tuna) and he's drinking a little bit. Over the past 24 hours he's gotten some of his energy back and is trying to be himself again (running around, being obnoxious, etc). I'm still pretty anxious about his condition, despite his improvement, but I don't think I'll need to take him to a vet again. He's an exceptional cat, and my best friend. He has more personality than I thought a cat could ever have. Videos of him are in my older blogs if you want an idea of how special he is.

Now the problem is the big gaping hole in my checking account. I'm $275 away from reaching that $410 (or rather, reaching $0). This means I can't buy gas, I can't buy food (I should be okay for a week or so though), or anything else until I reach a positive amount in my account. I don't have credit cards, but I just applied for one for emergencies like this.

I would greatly appreciate any help!!!

$410.03? I'd just shoot it.

that's terrible. I'm hurt someone could say that.
Baron von Aaron
Baron von Aaron on Apr 10 '07 at 11:57am
well sister, if you're not buying food or gas because you have to pay for your cat's medical bills, it's time to lose the cat.
melhel86
melhel86 on Apr 10 '07 at 12:00pm
yeah that's pretty cruel. I had a friend by over $800 for a pet rat. This is a cat, a little larger, a little less scary and half the amount. Be nice.

I have no paypal account !! I'll try to figure out a way to help though!

I hope to God baron von aaron you never have any pets, children or unforeseen medical expenses for yourself.

If you had a child with a medical condition that was costing you $1000 and you couldn't buy food or gas, would you shoot your child?

People get very attached to their child and it's pretty much the same situation.
leliophelia
leliophelia on Apr 10 '07 at 12:23pm
Exactly. He's all I have to take care of... I care for him like a child. He's a life, not some stuffed animal I'll throw away when things get too cluttered.

Thanks guys. :)

Don't do ebay, do rethreaded.net! I think you'll get more for them there because everyone who goes there is looking for Threadless shirts, and there are no stupid fees. Plus they stay up until they sell for the price you want to sell them for, unlike on ebay.

i hate to say it, but my old cat had the same symptoms and he died a few weeks later.

i would give you some extra cash, but i just checked my bank account and i seriously have eight dollars to last me until friday.

i'm so sorry though, i hope everything is working out okay, and my cat was old, so who knows.

leliophelia
leliophelia on Apr 10 '07 at 8:19pm
oh boy... I hate to hear that. Did he get better before he died? Because Toulouse seems to regained a lot of his energy and is practically gobbling up a can of tuna a day.
AsStarsGoOut
AsStarsGoOut on Apr 10 '07 at 8:22pm
oh then that's a good sign! my baby didn't get better, maybe Toulouse has a stomach flu or constipated maybe? but i'm sure your vet would've noticed if he was constipated.

hmm. . . did they get a urine sample to test for a UTI?

i'll send you some money for your kitten... i hope he gets better

do you think it was that recalled pet food? i've been checking all my pet food products, even treats, for wheat gluten
leliophelia
leliophelia on Apr 10 '07 at 8:31pm
Yeah I figured he might have some minor sickness and the amoxicillin took care of it. Or he had a severe case of depression (I was gone in NY for a few days with family, and he developed this sickness when I returned), which can cause all of those symptoms in a cat. No tests for a UTI, though. He's using the litterbox fine now, though. I think he'll be okay... still holding my breath though.

Yep, I recognized your name, Sonmi/Julia. I visited your art site awhile back and put on in my bookmarks for sites to look at for inspiration when making my own, haha. Thanks again for the donation!

And thanks cherrylimade! I appreciate it so much. And yeah, I checked his food and there isn't any wheat gluten (he's on Purnia One Kitten Chow), though I thought at first it had to do with it...

just keep an eye out for his urine. My kitty now had a uti once, he had trouble holding his bladder and he left little pinkish yellow pee spots where he sat. . .he was down in the dumps before we noticed his weird colored pee. I'll cross my fingers!
leliophelia
leliophelia on Apr 10 '07 at 8:42pm
Yeah, I don't think that is a problem... he's not having any issues in urinating, but I'll keep an eye out definitely.

I don't have a paypal :(

If there's anything I could send in the mail tho that would be helpful but not cost a ton to ship (like cans of tuna or food would), let me know, though!

I'm glad it sounds like he's getting better...my friends' big golden lab got lyme disease a bunch of years ago and he suffered what your cat went through, but for a few months, until he finally wasted away. Since it got his kidneys, there was nothing they could really do :(

oh damn

if i had money i totally would because i'd be doing the exact same thing for my cat Hobbes because he's pretty much the best thing thats ever happened to me

i'm going with what flourpower just said

if there's anything you want sent to you, let me know and i'll do what i can. food for you, the kitty, etc.

mic_n_me@yahoo.com is my email

let me know!!

I'm definitely sending over money, I'm sorry it won't be much, because I too, am VERY broke right now. But it's much more important for your cat to be healthy versus me spending it on yarn, lol. I had a problem with my cat a while back and couldn't afford the bill, so I know what it's like. *hugs* glad he's doing better!

thanks Kirsten!!!

I may be coming into an advance check from work and can cash it for food for me and the kitten, so I should be okay on food, but thanks!!

Don't worry about it... only if you guys can afford to help me. I'm usually broke and would find it hard to donate to the same situation. I'm very touched that so many people have!

Uhm, well, Paypal connects to your bank account and you can send and receive money. It's connected to eBay but I use it for everything.

There is a big difference between a child and a cat. Would I shoot my child if he or she had unexpected medical bills? Of course not. It's a completely different situation. My child I made and am legally and ethically responsible to take care of; a cat, while still having the right to live, is not important enough to sacrifice daily necessities in order to keep it alive.

And as for me, I have 3 dogs, a turtle, and a kenyan sand boa. We also have 2 horses. I've been around animals all my life, and worked on a ranch with 5 dogs and countless horses raising cattle and goats. Two of our dogs were poisoned by jackoffs who fed them meth-laced meat. I know how a pet's death can be heartbreaking. But if you're asking for money on a t-shirt submission site because you don't have a surplus to pay for it, then personally I would say "bye-bye" to kitty.

Baron Von Aaron, Technically I think once you own an animal you are Ethically and Legally resposible for it... you can get put in jail for animal cruelty if you do not take an animal you own to get vet care, and I think no matter how much time you have spent around animals matters if you wouldn't do as much as you can for them to be happy and healthy instead of throwing them away. I think as long as the other people in this blog don't car neither should you.
