I understand that this shirt is trying to parody traditional gender stereotypes, but it just doesn't work for me on that level. The title isn't on the shirt (except in the tag), and therefore most people who view it will read it straight, i.e. as an endorsement of those gender roles. You know, I like being a girly princess, and I'm so glad my boyfriend is a manly soldier. That's such . . . BS in my opinion. My relationship is based on having a lot of interests in common, and it's a very happy and fulfilling one.
The shirt needed to have more gender play, like inverting the colours or mixing up the accessories or whatever. So, I guess the irony is that this shirt is perpetuating the same stereotype that it's trying to examine. That said, I might buy it and wear for when I teach gender studies at the university. :P about City Lights
I wish they had reprinted the girly version on khaki too. I bought the design in the green when it was first printed, and realised I hated the colour with a passion. I don't wear the shirt as a result, which is a shame, because it's a badass design. about Our Radio
I love this design, but wish they'd printed the girly version on khaki. Creme just isn't attractive. about This Is Not a Pipe
Magritte and Mario! This shirt is like living inside my brain! ^_^ about Africa
I come from South Africa, and this shirt makes me sad. 1) Africa is not a single place. It's a continent that consists of diverse countries with diverse cultures. It's like saying the USA, Canada and Mexico are America! 2) We have more than wildlife here. The Lion King is not an accurate picture of Africa in general. 3) The shirt reminds me of a logo of a bank here: https://www.fnb.co.za/ Stereotypes ftl. :( about E=MC Escher
I love Escher, but I hate shirts with Einstein on them. You can imagine how happy I am in most science museum gift shops. This shirt is better than the ones where he's a punk, but I still wouldn't buy it.Someone do a tesselation shirt, darn it! |
