about Africa
I come from South Africa, and this shirt makes me sad.

1) Africa is not a single place. It's a continent that consists of diverse countries with diverse cultures. It's like saying the USA, Canada and Mexico are America!

2) We have more than wildlife here. The Lion King is not an accurate picture of Africa in general.

3) The shirt reminds me of a logo of a bank here: https://www.fnb.co.za/

Stereotypes ftl. :(

But what's wrong with a shirt that only depicts the wildlife? I don't see how that's stereotypical.

^It bugs me that it's similar to a shirt printed on camisteria or w/e... His pirates shirt was printed there too.

We are only interested in sterotypical African stuff. So this shirt does justice.

Would you be happier if it were called something else, or is it the whole concept of the shirt?

so if some one shows the grand canyon, buffalo roaming, the mississippi river, and whatever canada and mexico have to offer, and it was called 'North America' it would make you sad?

that's ridiculous.

maybe these are just this one designer's favorite things about africa.

and africa, as a continent, does have alot of unique forms of wildlife, which i think are beautifully celebrated on the shirt.

and, aids is hard to draw.
Andy Mason
Andy Mason on Jul 17 '06 at 4:15pm
i guess what im trying to say is... africa is a very diverse place and would be very impossible to depict every facet of it on one small, medium, large or even xxxxxl shirt.

don't have unrealistic expectations and you won't be bummed

Whoa, that was bad lol.

But really, the part of Africa I'd be most interested in would be the safari/animal part...

Hey, a shirt of Americans would have like...fat people or something. Be proud that your country has something cool like awesome wildlife associated with it!

An accurate socio-political South African shirt!

Might that be one with angry white people that round up all the money from the indigenous blacks who are left with nothing but debilitating disease and rotten canned goods! I'll take 2... Men's medium.

I don't think the Apartheid, the crisis in Sudan, the problems with AIDS, poverty, female genital mutilation, and child prostitution would make for a better shirt.
Skyiscool
Skyiscool on Jul 18 '06 at 1:24am
yah I think that the shirt is great, so we identify with the safari when we think of Africa, most Africans would probably think of the Statue of Liberty or our political antics if you told them to think of something having to do with the US.

my mom grew up in sydney. she had the same problem when she moved to the states: everyone figured she must have had kangaroos in the back yard. she used to tell them yeah, just like they have buffaloes in their back yard in akron.

i have a friend who grew up in south africa. last year, he and i spent a weekend at a hotel in cobham, down by where the A3 and the M25 intersect to the southwest of london. we were all stunned by the breakfasts each morning: we would retreat to the porch or our rooms to recover. regaining strength on sunday, i went out to find him out on the back porch watching bunnies hop around on the yard. intently. for a long time. "what the hell are you doing?" i finally asked. "shhhh," he said. "look." turns out he'd seen lions and elephants in the wild, but it was the first time he'd seen a rabbit in the wild.

i don't get grumpy at bunny t-shirts, karen. some things aren't prejudices, there's just the context we carry around.

i think she is upset because she wishes Africa would be known for more and better things, not only animal life..I can relate to what she comment and i dont think you guys should take this so seriously, her either..

Tho if i were from Africa i would be way tired of people thinking i lived in the jungle..if it makes it any better, people know jack about Chile either..they actually know almost nothing about it, so if people know a little from your country, maybe you should take it as a compliment instead of lack of knowledge ; )..it might make things go a little easier..

you should feel proud that anyone acknowledges your country anymore.... think about it.... what exactly does africa bring to the table, aside from war, famine, poverty, those "dying children tv ads," AIDs, and of couse the animals to put in our zoos?

please, im intrigued.
